I posted this elsewhere...then felt it should be a new thread. During this time of some web site restructure.... here are a couple of suggestions.
Suggest a video page be added to the associtation page. I think it would provide some interest as I certainly enjoyed seeing Ben's and y'all know I've offered a couple in the past and have them on my web site.
There are a few problems yet... like which format? Mozilla browser failed to get it so had to fall back to IE.
Not sure what approach to offering a video page would be... one would be to host the videos but that might challenge the association considerably do to storage allocations and monthly bandwidth restraints. The other is to provide a link page for those who otherwise provide their own storage... this likley being the way to go, at least initially. Of course doing so places a demand upon the web master to purge links that may no longer be current.
I would point out that our model airplane web site manager has offered one video clip just to show what can be done with comment that there is really no bandwidth remaining to offer more. He however is reluctant to do links.
I joined Trailer Sailors a few months ago... and they do provide a link page to personal web sites with categories for personal, sailing related, or buisness. Their webmaster worked with me for a short time prior to listing my link as there were a few pages on my site that needed some text reformatting and a couple that had html tags visible while browsing with IE.
Also relative to this is tech tips... on the tech tips page, there could be links to tech tips or pages of tech tips that the contributor would rather personally manage. This is a mixed bag however... as it would certainly require a disclaimer by the association for the results of the links as of course the host could alter the content at any time. The advantages however are that the person offering the tech tips can manage those much easier...adding, editing or deleting. That method would also save the association bandwidth.
The nature of the web however is quite versitile... for example, if video link or tech tip link pages were offered and beyond the time restraints of the web master... they could be handled by other volunteers without yielding managerial access to the association site.
A personal observation... the association site has been very disciplined sites over the years. Flame wars have been virtually non-existant as have political or politically incorrect post. This says a lot for the caliber of the membership. Personally, I doubt if we'd have any problems hosting link pages.
And, while I'm making suggestions... suggested is some method to recognize past web masters. Jeff Pierce conceived and originated the site and designed some of what still remains. It was his vision and hard work that ultimately altered and broadened the character of the association giving it a forum to go beyond a somewhat racing orientation to one that also offered assistance to the new owner, daysail and cruising inclined. His opening black shimmering screen with music background received many accolades from visitors to the association site.
Mark Melchoir's quick action to provide an alternate forum that had the effect of restoring civility... likely saved the association from collapse during a tough hour. His labors included two forum format changes... and much effort in dealing with hosting services. He added considerably to the web site's offerings.
So, I think there should be some acknowledgment offered to past web managers. This can be simply done and would be a great way of our showing respect and appreciation for their efforts.
I will try to take a stab at dates but please correct me...
We are working hard to pick up the great web sites created by these past masters and take them forward. Please bear with us if there are some problems caused by elimination of the 2nd hosting site. We will post an acknowledgement of these men on the main site.
When threads contain such valuable information that people think they should go into the "Tech Tips" please someone nominate them, and someone second them, and I'll pull the material and create a tech tip from it. I don't always read the C250 threads so somehow let me know about their gems of knowledge.
As to letting the Contributor personally manage the content, that is difficult. Let me think about it, we may be able to offer Microsoft Frontpage Server Extensions to a select few. That enables remote web page creation and editing live. We can certainly offer to have some co-web-editors, give them the ftp password, and give them permission to a select set of sub pages. Then you can use any html/imaging tool you like at home and upload the content to your assigned area without affecting the rest of the site. If anyone would like to volunteer, just speak up!
We'll be happy to add links to anyone's personal C25 web pages. Just email me your links.
Give us a little time and we'll be happy to add video pages.
