I originally posted this at the end of the Honda engine question...sorry.
Is it necessary to fuse the starter circuit on my '85 9.9 Sailmaster?
Blew a fuse yesterday trying to restart. First time or two out it worked great...today as I was leaving the slip the engine stalled. Got restarted but no power. Stalled again, then NO response from the start switch...it turned out to be a blown fuse. It seems that a PO had installed a 20a Time delay in circuit.
Upon investigation it has turned out to be cruddy with corrosion. (Yours truly did not check that item this past winter) I speculate that my trying to restart, too much, caused the fuse to over heat and blow.
After I located a good meter, I found the blown fuse, wired around it and the motor started and ran well. At least for a short time.
The shop manual makes no mention of this being a fused circuit...
So back to the question, Does it really need to be fused?
Now comes the question, Why did it stall in the first place?
I suspect water in the fuel since the airvent has been open since March (condensation) and last week end we scrubbed the deck, cockkpit and fuel locker...How dumb is that?

Thank you for your help,
Bill Jaworowski

I've never heard of a "fused" battery-to-starter wire. Just seems to be asking for trouble.

As for the engine stalling problem, check the fuel pump to make sure the screens are clean and the diaphragm is intact. If the screens are gunked up, clean them up and reinstall. Inspect the plugs and replace if questionable. Also, check to make sure that the idle is set properly. I believe your engine doesn't have a low speed mixture adjustment(it is factory jetted/metered), so that rules that out, but make sure your fuel(mixture, age,...etc) is okay.

Are you letting it warm up adequately? Is the high speed mixture set properly?

Bill... It's gotta be all in your head. Those motors "purr like kittens" for at least 50 years without changing plugs, adding gasoline, oil, or anything! ...or so we've been told. <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>

Bill,
Dave is almost right, those things run forever. I have a '93 Johnson 9.9 hp alternator, electric start, 25 " It has had just one problem in all those years...at year eight it started stalling at will... the stall was one in which the motor seemed to be winding down, not a flat out dead motor, but what seemed to be running out of gas...at first I'd catch it with the primer bulb and it would fire up/ a no brainer, fuel starved. I went to the Johnson maven and for $17+ he sold me a fuel pump rebuild kit( should've gotten a new pump)for a person as far sighted as I am, and without my glasses it was a sweat. But in the end all worked out well. Some of what you say sounds like the problem that I encountered. Hopefully your solution will be the same.

Bill,
I disagree with Don about fusing/protecting start leads. How quickly could you disconnect the power leads to your outboard in the case of a shorted starter motor? Which would you rather have, glowing red power leads burning off their insulation over there entire length or a fuse that requires occasional maintenance? How quickly can you get a fire extinguisher to the length of your start leads? I will give you that the likelyhood that a starter motor short is not common, but unprotected power leads are risky.

Earl,

Huh?...If your starter motor itself were to malfunction, just let go of the starter switch to disconnect power to it.

I think it would be far better to have a disconnect switch on the starter wire in the event of a malfunction, rather than an inline fuse.

Additionally, does anyone have a fused starter wire on anything(car, boat, truck, lawnmower, snowmobile, jetski,...etc)? I've never heard of doing this.

Don, Earl, Val,
Chapter two:
Last Sunday afternoon I cleaned the plugs again and pulled the fuel screen to see if fuel was getting to the pump. Fuel supply seemed OK. Someone offered a bit of gas stabilized, I added about 1/2 oz...not enough the hurt...maybe help. We tried running it in gear with the boat lasheed down...picked up OK...until we throttled back and to shift to reverse. Then it got balkey...Gradually it seemed to inprove??? So gave it a lake test, but could not get out of the marina. I had to reverse to let another boat pass and she died. (Got rescued by a friend in a Bayliner). Later I added a couple of oz's of Water Drier, but did not get a chance to see if that will be the fix.
In a way it acts like a Quadrajet with a clogged accererator pump. So I bought a new fuel pump and will install it this weekend. In the process of reading through the shop manual I remembered that my helper had been fiddeling with the Low Speed Jet knob and it is apparently out of wack. So I'll bench mark that and see what happens. I'm thinking the suggested fuel pump is the culpret. I'll ley uou know.
On the subject of the fused starter circuit, the shop manual goes on to say thaat you should not disconnect the battery while the engine is running or you will fry the alternator diodes. If it ran lomg enoygh with a blown fuse, I could have another problem...we'll see. Based on not wanting to disconnect the battery from a running engine...so, the fuse stays out. No other electric circuit on the boat will be unprotected...just the starter motor.
Once again you have been very helpful and provided an important level of comfort.
Now all I have to do is learn how to sail.
Monday afternoon, Barbara and I were invited to sail on a firends 33' hunter...the engine had to wait.

Thanks again,
Bill Jaworowski

One last shot,
As I asaid earlier, I added a 'Water Absorber' to the fuel, but did not get a chance to wring it out last Monday. Saturday I replaced the fuel pump, but the hose was so bad It would not seal. Sunday, with a new hose and a properly set low speed idle jet she started and ran well. No stalling at all when shifting forward to reverse and back. Even with the vent closed....this whole afair is an exercise in poor planning...At any rate, I think this has been avaluable lesson, to wit, "Do your homework, nitwit".
Was it the water absorber? the fuel pump? the rotten hose? the idle jet adjustment? a combination of all three? Who knows...but it works.
Thank you,
Bill Jaworowski
