I know this is not a motor forum, however, the 9.9 is popular for the catalina 25. I had a new water pump put in in Kemah Texas in feb, and ran the boat from Kemah to Corpus Christi, Tx, approx 40 hours of motoring as the wind was on the nose most of the way down. The water pump worked great with a good telltale stream at the back of the motor. Now it seems that the water "falls out" versus the stream and I feel that the pump or line may be affected. Is this common and is it a relatively easy do it yourself task for a moderatley handy person. I got taken to the bank on a task by a local shop and am a little leary of taking this in to get this replaced if i can do it my self. Any advice is appreciated

Hi Dan,

I've just been through hell with my outboard, and it was all related to the water pump. If I understand your description, it sounds to me like your pump is still working ... otherwise there wouldn't be any water getting to the top of the outboard to cool the head and "fall out."

It could be that the "pisser" hose has become disconnected from the engine head. Instead of expelling water in a stream, the water is just spilling out of the cooling channel around the head, then it drips out of the bottom of the cowling.

You should be able to check that hose by removing the cowling ... if that's all that's wrong, all you've got to do is stick the hose back on ... it's an easy fix.

'Hope that made sense ... good luck!

Could be as simple as a piece of crud in the 'pisser hose'. Often placing your finger over the hose for a moment or two to back-pressurize the system will dislodge the blockage.

PISSER HOSE ! I like that.

I have a '93 Johnson bought new. Never flushed it as recommended until the PISSER HOSE stopped displaying it's product. Put a spray of vinegar up the hose and let it set over night, meanwhile bought a flushing connector from Johnson and flushed it out the next day. That solved my problem.

The "93 Johnsons have a screw in the motor head water jacket into which one puts the flush attachment attached to a water hose etc.

Same water pump, thought I'd do the easiest first before replacing the pump.

Dan86,
Pisser Hose...I didn't even know there was one...now I know it's name!
Over the winter I replaced the water pump in mt '86 9.9. A real pain to get to, but not impossible...Did not check it out until I launched...BIG MISTAKE! As I got the motor started, my mentors noticed that the 'Pisser' was not pissing...We put the boat back on the trailer, and proceeded to tear into the water pump...another mentor dropped by and suggested that this was similar to a problem he had experienced some time back...he had fixed his by poking a small wire up the 'Pisser'. Which I did...voila...the pisser works! It even works while cranking! The suggestion of a clog up may be the answer.
Sorry to have tagged on so late...hope you got it squared away.

Have not had a chance to try the probe or vinegar methods yet. Plan to this weekend. Have been busy repairing my rudder that had a tiangular chunk missing at the lower pintal strap. I have now been introduced to epoxy and figerglass repairs, and hope I have a strong enough job to support the rudder. I also added the heavy duty gudgeons, extra long lower strap (with 4 bolts instead of 2) and added glass to the gudgeons on the interior side to beef up the transom. This forum has been helpful to a new owner. I thought I would have to add an inspection plate to get to the hardware behind the upper gudgeon, but it sure helps to have others support the decision!<img src=icon_smile.gif border=0 align=middle> Dan86, 86 fin keel, tall rig Corpus Christi, Tx
