Trying to register my C-25, and I need to find the hull number, which the state claims is on the transom. Found a plate with a 4-digit number there, but the state is looking for 12 characters. Is there only the 4-digit, or is the full hull number somewhere else? Thanks in advance.

Your hull number should be embossed into the hull near the forward part of the boat near the rail on the starboard side. It is going to be a combination of a number of things. You will probably not find the hull number on your transom, as it wasn't a required location when most of our boats were built. Take a look here for a reference
The full HIN (hull indentification number) is located on the starboard side of the transome - just below the rub rail as Douglas and Don state. In earlier production years, this number and letter combination was engraved into the gel coat with a hand "dremmel" tool. Later model years had an imprinted number. The engraved HIN is often hard to see. Especially on white or light tan hulls. You may need to use a dark color crayon to help the letters and numbers stand out.
Of course, if you have the 4-digit hull number from the small plate on the inside of the transom, you could call Catalina Yachts (818-884-7700) in Woodland Hills CA and they can probably give you the number and maybe even send you a copy of the original Manufacturer's Statement of Origin that has the complete number on it.
I have a '78 and had trouble finding the hull numbers the first time I looked. I did find it starboard, aft, on the outside just below the rubrail. What made it so tricky to find was the fact that the years had taken their toll on the depth of the stamp. Make sure you look closely with a bright light and I think you'll see it's there.
