Since yesterday was Wednesday, we had another informal "fun" sail at Canyon Lake. This one turned out to be a duel between Steve Steakley and Bren Peterson ... I was sucking the hind tit, as usual.
Here is the start ... look closely and you'll see both Steve and Bren have their fangs out!
I got so far behind I ended up driving around in circles working on sail trim ... I'm awful, but I'll figure it out sooner or later. Anyway, we had fun, and that's what counts!
This was one of the greatest Wed. Beer Runs...We had a three minute start and 3 boats, Bren's 250WB, My 250WK and Buzz's Cat 25.... We all started in the same general area, give or take 100 yards..then we all sailed to different marks on the lake and back to the Marina..everybody got first place!... we each chose our own course, Bren sailed to LCYC on the North East side of the lake, I sailed to the South East side, and Buzz sailed somewhere? it was fantastic, winds were 10-15 with a few gust...and it was hard for me to tell the difference between a WB and a WK ??, should of had my camera!!, Great Sunset..All are invited to Canyon Lake to join us each Wed. Night! Steve
Hey, check out the 1st and second picture..notice anything?? Bren has a 110 Jib, I have a 135 rolled out to about a 110...who is healing more?? Me, the WK...Does a Water Ballest weigh more??, Bren noticed that I was healing over much more then he was when we were close together sailing in the same winds? Steve
Yes, the water ballast is heavier... though its not believed to be as stiff because its weight is not as low as the wings.
If you compare the boot stripe which I think may be the same for both boats... the wing should sit higher in the water which makes for a faster boat off wind with less wetted surface.
The observations that yall will make in the coming weeks will be quite interesting. Bren seems to be closer in... and Steve may have better air in the pics hence the extra heeling.
I have no experience watching the WB 250 - but I've watched Steve's WK often enough to know that it's extremely tender. When we were side by side last week a gust of maybe 10 knots hit us - I heeled 15 degrees, looked to leeward and was looking at most of Moon Chaser's bottom - I can tell Steve exactly where he's missed some spots while cleaning his hull! I'm looking forward to seeing Bren's WB in action - he dry sails it so he may be faster than anticipated. Derek
First, I think Steve has an unfair advantage: He's got to get an extra couple knots of boat speed with the extra air the bimini catches when heeled that much. I didn't realize that Catalina made the 250 in a ketch version.
Second, I think the fact that Steve was solo and I had my buddy (who weighs about 220) as rail ballast could be a factor as well with the flatter ride.
Third, Steve, I think WE clearly won. While we may have rounded the incorrect mark, at least we rounded A mark! Even though you may have gone to the correct cove, I think indeed you failed to find (and therefore failed to round) any mark!
Obviously, I hope you know I'm kidding! It was a lot of fun and am realy looking forward to next week. Looking forward to having Derek to follow! Hopefully he'll lead us all to the correct marker!
While I'm still not really sure of the reasoning, I was kind of surprised at how 'Moon Chaser' was heeling so much. I think the WB may seem tender in the initial heel (she wants to snap right over to ten degrees or so) but she seems to tighten pretty well after fifteen. I don't think we ever passed twenty degrees yesterday. I think the time in my little 16 ft daysailor (which was REALLY tender) may dampen my view that the WB is a tender boat.
See everyone next week!

No representation in the Nationals.
Y'awl ought to make an effort and have boats at the next Nationals.
Come and try to show us your transomes!

Don - I really did want to come to this year's Nationals. However, my trailer loaner and tow vehicle loaner both fell through...then Judy announced that we had family visiting over that weekend...then I got an abscessed tooth...and 2800 miles round trip, with 6 nights in a motel for 3 people (and just for 4 races) is economically unfeasable. Sorry...we have to shoot for somewhere nearer the middle of this huge Country next year! Anyone listening on Lake Texoma??? Derek P.S. Who won???
I was only funnin. It would be great to have 30-40 boats sailing in the Nationals. I know that's tough, what with family obligations, no trailers, school schedules, but it still would be great! I've sailed in a couple of Ensign Nationals and we had 40-50 boats on the line. Certainly makes starting different, and more important to the final outcome.
So, why could we get 30-40 boats? Wouldn't that be great for the c25/250 class?
Who won?
See Ed's thread on the 2003 Nationals being a success. He gives the breakdown.
There was no overall winner, but I suspect if the fleets were handicapped together, Milby would have won that - that is my biased guess.

Thanks Don! I too would like to see more entries in our Nationals - but it is a permanent problem to get folks to trailer an "almost impossible to trailer" boat long distances. If someone could find the answer we'd all be eternally grateful! In the C22 Nationals this year there were only 28 boats in the Gold, and 6 in the Silver fleet (held in Galveston Bay, Texas) and the C22 is made to trailer! Derek
I understand the problem, as I'm part of it and didn't, wasn't able to take osmepneo to Syracuse. It is my wishful thinking and idealistic mind dreaming.
Our boats are kinda at a limit for one design racing, maybe even beyond the limit, but maybe we can talk it up, and encourage others to plan on being at the 2004's Nationals. Maybe we could have better participation.
Oh well, I gotta get to meeting and then after Bible Study this evening its off to the lake for the rainy weekend. osmepneo should be in the water and now its time to see if the motor wants to cooperate.

Thanks to Steve for taking the photos ... he was nice enough to take some shots on Father's Day while he whizzed past me!
Here's another photo Steve took at about the same time ... this guy shot right between us ... that's my boat on the far left side ... it was an eye-opener!
Yep, Buzz is right, but there were 5 of them and they threaded themselves through about 4 sailboats...That pic that buzz posted shows a nutcase at full speed about 25 yards off..., we all fourtunatly lived through it, Steve
As I looked at the pictures again, I noticed that one jib was partially furled, and the the winds seemed to me looking at a picture fairly light. Why only 11o and unfurl to about 110. Why not 135 or even if possible 150?

Well...one of those nut cases is in serious doo doo right now... for hit and run. The sad thing is... most hit and runs are because of drinking. And, they wont likely stop until hit and run has stiffer penalties than operating while intoxicated.
I had a young man hit and run me this past year which led to an interesting series of actions.
Witnesses...got his license number.
The police sent a certified letter to the owner...giving ten days to provide the details of who was operating the vehichle during the time of the accident and insurance information.
The owner didn't respond in the time limit.
I had my insurance company hold processing my claim in hopes I wouldn't have to pay the deductable to get my truck repaired.
After the owner didn't respond, the police suggested I file on my insurance as they weren't looking for the guy.... but had an outstanding warrant issued on the owner for not responding...they would wait for him to come to them... next time he was stopped.
I filed and had my truck repaired at which time my insurance company sought repayment from the hit and run based on their ability to identify that the other vehichle was insured with another company.
His insurance sent him a letter...why had he lied to them when processing a claim to fix his truck by telling them his truck had been hit in a parking lot by an unkown driver?
At which time, the owner (dad of the driver) wanted to know why his son had lied to him about how the truck was damaged.
Given my name by his insurance company, the dad called me to get details of the accident.
I made him aware that the police had sent him a certified letter.
He questioned his family about the letter and found that they had sand bagged it from him to protect the son.
He of course called the police, because of the enclosed threat from them that if he didn't respond, a warrant would be issued.
He provided the police with the information they wanted about the driver and insurance.
His insurance company denied remimbursing mine...based on the denial that their insured had been involved in the accident with me.
I revisited the police to inquire about what next.
They handed me an updated police report showing that the son of the owner had by his father been named as the other driver.
I submitted the amended accident report to my insurance company.
They request reimbursement again and with this report got it.
My insurance company refunded my deductable.
I do not know if the young man was ever cited for the hit and run... The police indicated that if I got my truck fixed and wasn't out any deductable... they would likely not carry it further as there were no injuries involved.
If it hadn't been for the witness that got the liscence number... I'd been out my deductable and had an accident charged against me... and the young man would have been succesful with his hit and run.
Good job Arlyn! Sometimes you have to be tenacious to get a measure of justice. The little rat didn't get prosecuted, but at least you and your insurance company were reimbursed.
