I'am in need of a new Master Cyl for a TrailRite trailer. I opened mine up in getting ready for the season and found it to be a rusted hunk of metal. Any suggesting form anyone. Thanks Bud
If there is rust in the system... the wheel cylinders will be contaminated as well...
Save the grief of changing the surge actuator out and recharging with fluid only to discover that the wheel cylinders need attention also.
In fact, all the fluid is contaminated with water...regular brake fluid is likel alchohol and sponges water.
Plan to rebuild the whole system and blowing out the lines. Go back with synthetic fluid, more expensive but doesn't absorb water and will keep the system rust free for many years... internal rust is the enemy of brakes... especially boat trailer brakes.
Some of the actuator brands no longer offer kits for rebuilding... when I talked with Champion, they suggested changing brands so I went with a Demco which they said they could supply rebuild kits for(several years ago).
My new trailer had enough rust to stick a wheel cylinder, wear out the cups and leak the fluid after only three years. I'm now on my fourth season with synthetic and during spring maintenance, the actuator reservoir was full yet and the fluid clear meaning their is no rust.
Check out the stainless disk brake conversion kit at Champion trailer. For a couple boat units more than a master cylinder alone you can 'go all the way' up to stainless. I haven't measured the backing plate bolt pattern on the end of my axles yet, but I think they are a straight bolt up.
Iron drum brakes on a trailer that gets splashed in saltwater are a PITA. Iron anything on saltwater is a PITA.
