Rain, rAiN, RaIn, RaiN, rAIn,...

Sorry--guess I'm losing it.

The NE has just set the all-time record for rain in June--the most in the 130 years they've been keeping track. Our Mondays have been nice.

Well, send some up here to NW California... we had one of the top 10 record rainfall years... and set an all-time record for April, but the rains quit too early just like somebody shut a faucet off.

Now the pastures are drying up... from too much to too little.

I'm guess I'm just a darn farmer... always complaining about the weather.

Currently maintaining two holes in the water...'77 Venture 23 and new to the family,
'78 Catalina 25

Last year we couldn't wash our cars, boats, water our lawns or fill our swimming pools......millions sent requests to the gods for rain......

Left home this morning at about 10:30 AM to drive to Dana Point for the first day of summer and a nice day sailing with the wife, youngest daughter, and her friend (her 1st time sailing) and our two dogs. It was RAINING on the way down - in San Diego!

Good thing it cleared up and we had a good day with winds around 5 - 7 knots, choppy seas, and swells about 3 feet. The kids got a turn at the tiller and jib sheets before retiring to the salon and their gameboys.

If you've been following any of my recent threads - the Honda 8 HP ran fine (thanks to all your tips). I did a perfect job backing out of the slip with the mainsail down(thanks to your tips). At the end of the day, rolling the sail up (we have a boltrope) instead of flaking worked great (thanks for that tip). My new manual inflatable harness arrived from Sailnet and I wore it all day today (thanks for that long thead on singlehanding safely).

By the way, I last weekend I finished recovering my interior cushions, re decorated the salon with throw pillows and new carpet, and applied teak oil to all the woodwork below (thanks also for that tip). The boat looks great.

We were pointing higher and passed a Catalina 30 in light air (thanks for all those tips on scalloping, sail trimming and pointing). What a thrill I got out of that (although he sailed right through the middle of the kelp beds and I think he was pretty fouled).

Docked, cleaned up, ate hot dogs, girls took the kayak out, walked to the marina village for ice cream cones, and home by 8.

To all of you across the country, fair winds and following seas (and no rain for a day or two)! And keep the tips coming!!

Jim, sounds like you're really enjoying the boat and your family.
That's what sailing is all about.

I think most folks who post here get great satisfaction from helping others along and sharing their knowledge.
That's what this board is all about.

Sadly, due to our horribly wet spring, my boat restoration schedule is way behind and the C25 is still on the hard... and due to that labor, the V23 isn't getting the attention it needs either.

Must get down to scrub the bottom and take her out for a sail.

Hey Bruce:

How do you decide which of your boats to use? I've always wondered how (and why???) you maintain two boats - I have a hard time maintaining just one!!!!!

 In “Alice’s restaurant” Arlo Guthrie talks about the “Last Guy”. He says when you have it bad someone always has it worse than you. At some point there is the last guy and no one has I worse than him.
While it’s true our sailing season has been dismal so far, there is a couple who have it worse than us. Last weekend Oyster Bay say saw 60 knots and lightning strikes everywhere. My friends Ron and Kathy are great sailors and cruise the Sound and points east each year in their Niagara 35, a beautiful Canadian boat. They had only gotten a one hour shake down cruise in before last weekend when they were hit by lightning. Now their boat is on a mooring close to the marina where the mast lays in the yard torn apart with the prospect of all the electronics, including every inch of wiring may have to be replaced. Even if the weather changes by the 4th they face a month of repairs.
There are many perks to owning a 25’ boat. I have a 44’ Cheoy Lee one side of me and Ron and Kathy’s 35’ Niagara on the other I am the smallest boat in the area, and the shortest mast for 200 yards.
I am lucky not to be a slave of weekends and have had a couple of nice sails but it has been a wet spring none the less.
The weather will change, and we will enjoy one of the greatest sailing areas in America soon.

Positive Mental Attitude (often mistaken for denial) is one of the best tools in the box. I'm not worried that we'll get some good sailing in this season.....

There's vacation planned in August...if the Chesapeake is still not nice I'm going to drive untill I find good weather and throw her in. That is, after all, the big advantage of a boat on wheels....<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

I am, however, getting sick and tired of pumping out/sponging dry the trench for my barn foundation trying to lay the first row of concrete block five at a time......I was hoping to be under roof by winter.....

Since I've been one of the wet complainers this wet NE year, I have to report that osmepneo is at her dock, waiting for final cleaning and bending the sails. Saturday was wet and rainy with T'storms in the area all afternoon, and Sunday rained most of the afternoon, not really hard, but . . ..

Have to get her ready for Saturday. We have the Long Distance race, around the lake and I'm planning on racing. First race in osmepneo, and looking forward to it. So long as we can finish by 8:00 p.m., otherwise we will be forced to withdraw.

More on this later!

Don,
I was up on Lake George all weekend taking some well needed sailing lessons on a Tanzer 22. Never even heard of a Tanzer, Saturday we had 10 knot winds all day out of the Northeast and one shower, lost the wind about 3:00. Sunday we had drizzle in the morning, light winds, no rain. Sun came out about 2:00 Good two days of instruction eventhough. "Brandy" has been setting at her dock since mid May in Northville and have gotten out exactly three times, perhaps the gods of weather will grant us some high water and good weather in September this year. Hope your race comes off OK.
