Talk to the same people you use to insure your house and cars. There's a chance your homoeowners will provide liability coverage if that's all you want.
Tim, I have a 78 Catalina 25 and insured it through Progressive (same people that cover my car). Both liability and hull combined were only $192. per year.

I have always used BOAT/US and did the same for my Cat 25. Have never had any problems. Cost is about $230/year (boat and liability) on my 1982 model year. Had a claim once on a power boat and had no problems/no hassles.
Hull insurance is a negligable part of the cost of policies for our old boats... BoatUS (CNA) seems pretty competitive and has a huge market share. Friends who have made claims (we haven't) have had very good experiences--for example, when their C-30 went up on the rocks during a hurricane, and another time when lightning (probably not a direct hit) took out all of their electronics. I like BoatUS's quarterly magazine that focuses on safety and other risks--a nice touch.

Boat US may be the best deal on liability only but still near $200 if on the water. I too went with Progressive to include hull insurance. As I am out of the country over half the time I then added my spouse and one son as drivers. The first son and spouse was a big hit to the budget. The younger son would have been quite high and I did not put him on. He has had three recent tickets.
I insured my 86 Cat 25 with West Marine- my homeowners wouldn't cover my boat due to a couple of parking lot accident claims... My agent is also a sailor and said that it was probably cheaper than going through him anyway, and it was. I think I pay $175 and they were great when I had a claim last year. NO hassles and no deductible. Loved it. Good luck! Karen :)
My BoatUS policy was only $120, and meets the requirements of the Marina, but is a declared value policy. If your boat is a total loss they assess the market value and apply depreciation, etc. Who knows what you'll get. Vessel Assist gave me a quote for $200 for an agreed value policy. If your vessel is a total loss they will pay you the agreed value in the policy.
I don't have much $ tied up in this boat. I mainly wanted liability and to meet the marina obligations. I went with the cheapest - BoatUS.
I SWITCHED BACK TO BOAT US FROM MARINE INS CO. BOAT US WAS A THIRD OF WHAT THE NEW HIGHER PREMIUMS WERE GOING TO BE. FOR ABOUT TWO YEARS THEY WERE COMPETATIVE WITH BOAT US AND THEN THEY MORE THAN DOUBLED THEIR RATES. I ALSO CHECKED WITH MY HOMEOWNERS INS. AND THEY WERE ABOUT THE SAME PRICE AS BOAT US BUT WANTED A SURVEY. DIDN'T WANT TO SPEND THE MONEY FOR A SURVEY SO WENT WITH BOAT US. PROBABLY SHOULD HAVE NEVER CHANGED FROM THEM IN THE FIRST PLACE.
