Hey Puffin Guy,
I researched furling booms recently, and cost stopped me cold.
there are approx 5 individual brands available. You can usually see them all advertised in Latitude 38 magazine. Practical sailor magazine did an in depth review of furling

Many thanks for the great info. Sounds like the best alternative is to make sure I always sail with friends who don't mind a bit of crewing.

We have used the starboard winch to raise the main on our 2001 250K
without any extra equipment or modifications. The halyard runs through a block at the bottom of the mast to a clutch which is right in fromt of the winch!
