i'm planning a little cruise from herring bay to tilghman is this weekend. looking at the charts i noticed a channel leading into a port on the south side of the island and another on the east side. i think i want to go to the southern one. my question is, Do any of you know of any place there where i can dock for a few hours. "not overnight," i plan about a 3 hour sail there, eat, then sail the 3 hours back. any local knowledge would be greatly appreciated.
Steve: go to West Marine or your favorite marine store and get a copy of the big spiral-bound Guide to Crusing the Chesapeake Bay (I think that's the title. . . or something like that). It will answer most of your questions about where to visit in the Bay. Mine's on the boat. . . else I'd look up Tilghman Island and tell you what it says.
I have been considering trailering my 25 to Chesapeake bat this october to sail a few days and then go to the Annapolis show. I would like to find a marina/resort south of annapolis and then drive up to the show. any suggestions of good places to sail to? Who makes the guide to Chesapeake bay that is good? I have seen several guidebooks out there. which one is best for sailing? Thanks

I sailed the Bay two summers ago and used the Cruising Guide referred to by others on this string. BUT, I also obtained the "Maryland Cruising Guide" published by the Maryland Dept of Natural Resources (published for the state by Williams & Heintz Map Corp 1-800-338-6228). This group of charts, which included very small charts of numerous popular stopping places on the Bay was great. also had some good navigation info. I highly recommend it. it showed, for example, distances between various points with MAGNETIC courses going both ways. (I didn't have a GPS at the time) Sorry. Can't remember the price.
Frank, the Guide to Cruising the Chesapeake Bay (published by Chesapeake Bay Magazine) has three sample week-long cruises: one for the mid, one for the upper, one for the lower bay. Those trips (and that particular book) would be a great place to start. There are, literally, a hundred places to put in and to visit, so you'll have to narrow your geography: do you want to sail to Annapolis, or putz around elsewhere and then drive in?
If you want to sail in the lower bay, I'd be happy to try and meet you in my home port of Urbanna. Otherwise, let me know what you have in mind, and I'll try to make some recommendations.
For: JoergK, where precisely is Herrison's? do they have transientslips available for lunch only or are they overnight?
For: Gloss, there are some nice berths in the shadyside MD area and the deale, md are for a good place to launch at still be faily close to annapolis without the annapolis prices. Further, you are very close to the bay in areas whithout many bridges. north of annapolis, there are a few nice places in teh magothy river which is a lot closer to annapolis yet still inexpensive compared to annap.
