My 86 C-25 SR/SK probably has the original life lines, or so they appear. The gates have never been easy to open and close and the lines appear worn in a few spots. CD sells a deluxe kit, that basically comes in pieces and you custom cut, crimp/swage and fit to your own boat for $310. It looks like I can buy the same bits and pieces from West Marine for $150. CD has always had better prices than WM in all that I have purchased so far. Any comments from the board on life line replacement and the large price difference I mentioned, would be appreciated.Fair winds, Todd Frye.

I dont know if you have access to a West Marine or Boat/US, but both of those, near me, have a table setup with Nicopress crimper, and sell wire, swage slugs, etc for do-it-yourself work. I have done a number of small jobs like pigtails, topping lifts, and dinghy painters but never tried lifeline replacements, dont see why it would be a problem, maybe a couple dollar learning curve whilst doing the first swage or two. Also there has been quite a bit of talk of late as to how modern cordage is as strong and long lasting as wire, many knowledgeable sailors are replacing lifeline wire with lifeline LINES, good luck, ron srsk Orion #2343 1981 in SW FL

Ron: when you have repetitive entries, use the delete icon (trash can) on your postings to eliminate them.

Practical Sailor (I think) had an article recently about NOT using vinyl covered lifelines. The vinyl masks corrosion, and PS recommends using the kind of wire used for shrouds instead (is that 1X19? I can't remember.).

I've also read about using cordage instead. It wouldn't last as long, but would sure be cheaper and easier to replace.

Todd, whatever you use, get some of the over-center pelican hooks from Johnson for the gates. They make all the difference in the world opening and closing the gates.

Brooke
