I recently bought a 1989 WK. The owners' manual indicates that the bottom should be painted with a no-sand primer - the gelcoat should not be sanded before painting.

I am thinking of stripping the bottom paint - a lot has chipped off leaving areas with just the bottom gelcoat showing - but I haven't found any 'no-sand primer' listed in any of the catalogs (or I have overlooked it). Does anyone know of specific kinds or brands that could be used before applying the antifoulant? I keep the boat in salt water about 8 mos. of the year.

Interlux used to make one (until about two years ago)... The word was they dropped it because they were getting complaints. My theory is that people weren't using it correctly--they weren't putting the bottom paint on before the primer dried completely. The directions were to paint when the primer is tacky. It worked well for me, but I read the directions... Now it's gone. I haven't seen another one.

Hi Daniel,
When I refinished the hull of my recently sold C22 last fall I sanded it down to gel coat, and I couldn't get all of the old primer, or whatever it was off. It may have been VC tar as it was black. I think I used Interlux's Primecon before I used Micron Extra with Biolux.
Have you checked out Interlux's website. If you go digging deep enough into it you will get lots of application instructions and pics. I have a fibre optic internet connection so speed is not a problem. Interlux also has a great application book. If you can't get one, send me a note, and I may be able to pick you one up at my local Boater's world.
Are you planning on putting on a barrier coat first?
I have to refinish my 89 bottom too, but I'll wait until spring as I am still recovering from my broken toes, and now, knee surgery. WAH!
I'm also porking out from the lack of exercise.

I use Interlux, and had very good results. I'd check their web site and see what's what. Probably bought my last can 2 or 3 years ago, and wasn't aware that they have dropped the product. Let us know what you find out.
