When the wind gets up to 10 to 12 I begin to get vibrations in the rudder. What causes these? What can be done to stop the vibes?

How much slop is in the fit of your gudgeons to pintles (the pins and brackets that hold the rudder on) ? Like anything else, they tend to wear after awhile and can get sloppy.

Is the rudder itself symmetrical ? No gouges, warps, one side shaped differently ?

Is there a lot of pressure on the rudder when you are getting the rudder vibrations? If so, you can try adjusting your sail trim to change the 'balance' of the boat... this can reduce or increase pressure on the rudder and might reduce the vibrations.

I had the same problem. When I cleaned my bottom, it went away. I attribute the rudder shudder to the grime hanging off the rudder and/or the turbulence coming from the grime hanging off the keel. I didn't think cleaning the bottom would help, as it's a fresh water boat and didn't have barnacles or any other large obstructions. But apparently, the removal of the lake grime made the difference.

I agree with John. It is mostly the keel that causes the turbulence that produces the vibrations. My hull is kept out of the water (so stays pristine) and the keel is the only part immersed. When I take the grandkids out, if I haven't cleaned the keel for over a week, I get those vibrations!

I had the same problem at lower speeds even, and being a boat new to me (with a fresh bottom), I had failed to notice a little slop in the lower gudgeon until I gave it a good shake. I tightened everything, and most of the shake is gone. I think there is a little slop in the fit due to wear, so it still gives a little wiggle under sail.

I too have a slight vibration in the tiller at slower speed, but it disappears as soon as I speed up...even a little bit. I have a new bottom and a sandblasted keel with new Interlux 3000, the 2000, the Micron-extra just finished in June, so it's not obstructions on the hull. I did have a persistent vibration, that I cured by allowing more slack in my keel cable. That vibratin, however, got worse with speed.

By the way, according to my GPS, Saturday I reached 6.9 MPH at Lake Cumberland in 10-15 MPH winds. For a new sailor, this was REALLY exciting.

Thanks to all for the "Forum". I have learned how to resolve many things before they reached up and bit me on the "below the waterline".

Randolph, you failed to mention the age of your boat. Mine is an 1982 and I experienced some slop in rudder when at anchor and had the tiller tied. The waves would rattle the two sometimes. I found a brass bushing at ACE Hardward that fit the Pintle perfectly and drilled out the Gudgeon to fit. Now I have a snug fit and no more slop while at anchor or while sailing. Good luck.
