I have a question for some of the more experienced people with a swing keel. How do you know when to stop cranking when raising the keel ? I know to count the cranks ... that gets me close. But as the keel gets close to all the way up I am concerned that cranking too far will put unnecessary and undesirable strain on the cable and fittings. So how do you know when to stop ?? Any insight would be appreciated.

Timpky, I do it by feel, as well as count the number of cranks. I doubt it you could put any serious strain on the cable etc. if you are carefully cranking near the top end. When the keel bumps the trunk STOP!!!

I usually slow down when I get close to 30 revolutions and crank slowly the last half turn or so. I have noticed that sometimes the cable feeds on the drum a little crooked and builds up on one side of the drum then slips suddenly. It has never given me any trouble however. If everything is in good condition I agree that you will not hurt anything even if you use a little extra pressure to make sure you are all the way up.
I get real careful around twenty, and by that time I am ready for the Chiropractor and neurosurgeon anyway. When the new winch is in, I expect to dance about the cabin whist twirling the crank, tra la. I only get twenty two revolutions no matter what and cant hear the keel "botom out " in the trunk, good luck ron srsk Orion SW FLwith original 1981 rusty winch, newer cable with LOTS on the spool.
