As our lakes slowly dry up with no forseeable end to our drout, I am most likely going to have to pull my boat next spring and trailer sail for a couple of years. I am looking for scheduled cruises next year that offer new experiences. The problem being in New Mexico, that cruises/events need to be at least 4-5 days long to make the drive worth the time. I would be interested in Southern California, Sea of Cortez, Gulf of Mexico and maybe even the Great Lakes if the events were of any length. Does anybody know of any planned cruises for next year? The internet is full of calendars, but not much geared to my needs (most are week-end get togethers). Would like to stay with similar boats if possible, Catalina '25's, Mac 26's, etc.
You are welcome to trailer to Mission Bay in San Diego, launch at one of the boat ramps, anchor in Mariners Basin, and join me for a 2 week cruise to Catalina Island. You can park your truck and trailer at my house (we have a small farm - plenty of space - could park a fleet).
Pick a date, I'm open. I would prefer mid July.
We will sail up the coast to Oceanside (slip), then to Dana Point (anchor), then to Catalina Two Harbors (mooring), then sample some of the other coves (anchor). Circumnavigation of the island is a possibility, as is an offshore day trip to Santa Barbara Island. Finally we would end up at Avalon (mooring) and either make a 100 mile overnight sail back to San Diego or harbor hop back.
Check out http://www.indiscipline.org and click on Indiscipline III to see this years cruise to Catalina. I've done this many times and would be the honorary "Grand Poobah". Vessel Assist membership is advised (on the water towing service).
The more the merrier if any others want to join. Only a loosely organized cruise. You manage your own liability and make your own decisions. Just "buddy boats". But I am very conservative and never sail in bad weather - not that any would be expected in Southern CA in July.
It's also possible to coordinate this with the Catalina Yachts Rendevouz or not (missed it this year).
Jerry Hardin worked up a good group this last year that did the Near Biminis Islands in April...think he may go again next spring.
Do you know Doug & Mo Cavin... who have a C25 and lives in NM... They sail the Sea of Cortez some... and did the Berry Bunch cruise in April with Jerry Hardin's group.
I agree...that to committ to hauling... It has to be cost effective and needs to provide at least two weeks of cruising to justify a long haul.
I sent an e-mail to Jim B. I am very interested in making the trip he has suggested. As I explained to him, we made our first trip out there last June and chartered out of Marina del Rey. We decided we wanted to go back with our boat and bring the kids along. I hope this can work out and we get as many boats as possible. I have a few freinds here with 25's & 250's and I know they are all interested in finding new places to sail as our water is dwindling. We have a big regatta next weekend to kick off our fall series racing and I will approach some others. Best wishes...Patrick Petracca
(I am going to have to get you guys to tell me how to add a picture to my postings?)
I would really enjoy organizing and participating in this event. Perhaps an Association Officer could step up and tell us how to make it an official Catalina 25/250 National Association cruise.
I e-mailed 2 days ago to the little clicky "e-mail" poster above?? My areas of expertise in life don't allow for anything more technical than that! My e-mail is ppetracca@aol.com. I would like to share some more thoughts and information with you. I will be back in later this afternoon and I'll post again then. Sorry we missed each other via e-mail.
As I just read through this read I was thinking that the association could reasonably be expected to "sponcer' various national association cruises. I would expect one issue that would have to be discussed is questions of liability, but that's not a problem for the national regatta, so with my pea brain, I can't believe it would be a problem for association sponsored cruises. Certainly a topic for discussion and thought.

I don't know whats happened in the past two years...but prior to that it was a problem for the National Regetta... but not considered great enough to cast a cloud over it.
In 2000, Rochester, NY was planning on hosting... and that fell through in part because of liability issues. Later, those in Long Island area took a short look at having it there... and backed off for the same reason.
Without coverage of some sort, the National Association as well as propbably the host of the Regatta are probably a bit strung out... but I doubt the risk are that great.
We've been fortunate in several previous years to have the National Regatta attached to other events that carried the umbrella, ie. Salt Lake City, and both southwest Michigan and southeast Michigan where our racing venues were intertwined with those of others who had an umbrella.
In 2001 when the officers discussed the Pensacola Winter Cruise... we felt that those events could and perhaps should be loosely ogranized without any official National Association sponsorship with each skipper 100% responsible for his boat and crew.
That is the way Beer events are handled, the Trailer Sailer group with their annual cruise, and how Jerry Hardin managed the Bimini and Berry bunches. To do that, those who have organized, felt that

planning wasn't the sole job of any one person, the event was the collective sharing of information and planning. While there is usually an event leader, he/she has no official control... each skipper is responsible for making decisions for the safety and welfare of his/her boat.

no fees or collections of funds

no restrictions or guidelines, ie. the happening wasn't a Catalina 25/250 only event where it could be contrued that it was a sponsored event

You make some very good points, but liability issues should be fairly easily addressable. As a non lawyer, I'd think a waver stating the essence of the points you made and perhaps stipulating a minimum level of liability insurance should be doable. It is a matter that the officers need to talk about among other priorities facing the organization.
That was then and this is now!
To build a strong organization we need to build strong fleets that provide for their member's needs. If that happens, then I'd think we have fleets that could organize events, that could be deemed national at the discretion of the officers. Or, may even solicited by the officers.
I'd be interested in what others think.

The only reason I would like it to be semi official is so that I can call Oceanside Harbor (or Oceanside Yacht Club), Dana Point Harbor, and Two Harbors on Catalina reserve some slips or moorings together. If I say I am calling from the Catalina 25/250 National Association I have a little more clout than if it's just me and a couple of buddy boats. Plus I'd like to fly the association burgee.
Do we have a lawyer member who could offer to draft a waiver that releases the National Association from liability on a cruise?
All members are required to have $300,000 liability insurance to utilize the slips anyways. I also strongly recommend membership in Vessel Assist ($80/year) which provides free on the water towing and other services. They are the premier provider here in Southern CA.
How about ”sanctioned” instead of sponsored. I know this is semantics but it is a big difference. The association “recognizes” local fleets and has no liability or responsibility for the fleet. It could be the same way with cruises. The advantage of presenting yourselves as a group could help in booking accommodations and may help in the prices. I would think that the association would have to insist that everyone be paid members. Also any of these cruises can be featured in the Mainsheet if you write up a few paragraphs and include a photo or two.

I totally agree that we need to build the local fleets. We list quite a few fleets but only four are active. The reason I nominated Gary Bruner for V.C. is that he formed and is Capt. of latest local fleet. His fleet is very active in both casual racing and cruising. We need to have active local fleets where ever there a number of C25's and C250's.
Patrick, Jim, and whomever else: I'm pretty sure we can do this. We've sailed out to Catalina several times in the previous C22 with kids, and with our C25 but it has been several (4?) years since. Sure sounds doable and fun. A week or two would be great. BTW, Jim, I emailed you using the email feature a few days ago, too. Apparently you didn't recieve it? My wife and I will be going to the SDSU vs BYU football game this Saturday night. We both are SDSU Alums (Go Aztecs! Almost beat OSU but the officials blew it for the Aztecs at the goal line - a non-call on OSU for pass interferance at the goalline - would have been 20 to 9, Aztecs win). Wanted to check out your boat while there. We'll be down early to do dinner and then the tailgate prior to the game. Gary up in Hemet
While not on the topic, I saw on the news that they're opening a new big lake out your way which has the bass fisherman drooling, waiting for the opener. Will you be sailing on it?
"I saw on the news that they're opening a new big lake out your way which has the bass fisherman drooling, waiting for the opener. Will you be sailing on it?"
Hi Richard. Diamond Valley Lake is indeed open..... The fisherman have reserved all weekends for the next month but anyone can reserve their spot at MWD (I call it WMD now). They're catching lots of really big bass. The main problem is that you reserve for the day so it is strictly day-use only....a big problem with raising / lowering masts in one day for big boats like ours. So we have decided to join Jim B. in San Diego at the Marina Village Marina. We like to sail Mission Bay, etc. and attend the Aztec games regularly w/some friends still living in the area. I can sail with my next door neighbor on his Santana 2023 because it is much lighter and easier to rig. Fees add up to $18 for a day, and you must be off the lake at sunset. Launch ramp is very large and they have installed launching docks for each lane. There is also a concessionaire who has a store and think MTBE-free fuel. Mostly catering to the fishing crowd. We hope to see slips built on the lake sometime in the next two years but I'm not waiting, nor holding my breath. We think they will stall as long as possible, maybe forever. Would also like to see (and am going to make calls to this effect) them put in an area to leave your boats rigged for a night or two. Of course, they will charge a bunch to do this, I would think. The lake is huge, with lots of coves you could anchor in overnight IF they would ever allow it, which they won't. This would be an OUTSTANDING regatta lake, shaped like an hourglass and with an elevated lake surface above the surrounding valley. Should produce some great winds which happen alot. Summers, though, are very hot in the 100s on average. Winters can be very cold but are usually mild. I wish they had slips right now. I'd be 15 minutes from home and 5 from work. So we go to San Diego for a year or so. Long drive but worth it. Just can't sail after work.... Gary Hemet
