Just noticed the red indicator light on main electric panel switch went out this week. I'm sure I am not the first for this. Boat is 1982 Tall with original panel. Any input for replacement appreciated as this is not merely a bulb replacement.

There are now available LED pilot lights with the required current limiting circuitry built in. Look for the ones with the desired voltage specified on the package. They are available in a variety of shapes, colors, bezels, panel hole sizes (3mm to 1/2"), draw almost no current (0.020A or less is typical), are impervious to hostile environments, and last about forever.
You can replace it with any LED that accepts 12 volts. I found my replacement at Radio Shack for a buck or 2. Simple installation: Pull out the old one and cut the wires. Push in the new one, and wire it exactly as the old. You can't screw up.

Frank,
Am I safe in extrapolating that to mean that the crystals are clear<img src=icon_smile_question.gif border=0 align=middle>

No, I just started thinking about this. Suppose I could try red fingernail polish like I did on my galley lightbulb.

I went to radio shack and picked up a two way toggle switch, cut a hole in the inside lining and installed a second red bulb. Now, when underway at night, I flip the switch to the left and its red and it doesn't interfere with my night vision. While at the dock or anchored, I flip the switch to the right and we have regular light.

Hi George,
Yep ... the topic did wander a bit ... still, there's some additional good information here.
I had a similar problem ... I found a 12-volt panel light at an auto parts store that fit the hole in the panel exactly ... it was only a couple of bucks, and it works great ... 'just had to remove the old one and solder the connections for the new one. BTW, the auto parts store had red, amber, and I think a couple other colors, too.
