Looks like a great sailing club Frank. Our little sailing club in Columbus, Ohio is finally going to have their own facility with 130-ish slips next year. In fact, we just got past all the red tape with the various state agencies, and this past weekend a lot of us started clearing the land of trees in preparation for the road and parking lot being put in. It won't have amenities as nice as yours, but it sure will be nice to have a place to call our own.

Ben, When I joined our club in 1981 there were; Two docks and they were shorter No hoist, we had a pull day for the big boats and a crane truck came from the city Only the state park shelter house for a place to “be” A brick out house affectionately know as the stink potty A boat yard for storage … that was it. The effort required to have anything there at all was immense. Some men with foresight had approached the Corps of Engineers, State Parks and Game, and the city of Wichita Water Department with their vision. We have had to fight for every thing that has ever gotten done at our facility. The state house now dabbles in spurious regs that threaten “clubs” on state property. Of course there are the three county governments that each have some jurisdiction over various areas of the lake. It took us years to build our shower house, it cost us over $100,000 (includes lagoon) and we have no title to it. Every improvement that we make technically belongs to the state, (unless it is floating). We have to allow anyone access to our area but in truth it is rare that any stink boaters come to an area the state calls sailboat cove on the park signs. We are very cool about non-members, we see them as potential members. I was recruited when I was using the ramp to launch my Tanzer 16. We pay for the construction and maintenance of our jetties and break waters, dredging and other large-scale projects. Some of our amenities are memorials paid for through special donations. The point of all of this is that it takes years to build up a club and true dedication by the organizers and members. If there is anything NSA can do to help you please let us know, our road map probably looks like the history or future of most clubs on lakes like ours. Our collective memory is available to you. PS Make sure you get some engineers, some teachers and some welders as members!
Thanks for the inspiration Frank. The sailing club people (ACSA (Alum Creek Sailing Association)) sound the same as your people, nice and friendly to non-club members. I'm joining next year, though I've been helping out in the dock effort. I've even been invited to club events. The docks are sailboat only, but not exclusive to club members. Anyway, it sounds like your early efforts are very similar to what ACSA has been going through. This campaign to get a sailboat-only dock facility has been decades in the making. Your comment about welders, engineers and teachers is well put. I work at an architecture firm and I offered my firm's services, and was actually able to assist in the bidding process for installing the docks, but beyond that I was not needed. There evidently is a club member who is an architect who did the plans for the club house.
