My new boat came with the el cheapo basic Lewmar #7 winches (non-self-tailing<img src=icon_smile_sad.gif border=0 align=middle>). Is it possible to buy just a new self-tailing drum and swap it, keeping the existing baseplate and stem? Or will I have to buy the whole thing? I can't believe how much more expensive even the small ST winches are. They are 3 times the price of the non-ST winch of the same brand and size.

The prevailing sentiment is that STs are not worth it on our boats. The mechanical advantage of the #7 is a good fit for our sail plan and the size of the STs is usually over kill. The new Lewmar 14 is cheaper but the drum is shorter than the #7 and could cause a problem depending on your sheet size. The base pattern will be different, (no you cannot change out the barrel for an ST), so you will be plugging holes and drilling more. I don't think most people get rid of their cleats when they get STs, so the coaming will be more crowded and the fairlead angle to the cleats will change requiring more plugging and drilling. I am going to add a second cabin-top winch to my boat so I can move the headsail halyard to port where it belongs. I have thought this would be a great opportunity to use one of my #7s off the coaming and help justify new STs. I like toys and after several weeks of stewing I have decided to simply buy another #7 and let it go.
You can't simply stick the ST drum and tailer on top of the #7 base. There are some pretty good exploaded views of these winches on the Lewmar website - and good maintenance advice as well.
