I am shopping for a GPS/Sounder for the new boat, will probably get a Garmin 168 or 238. Has anyone used these transducers that don't require drilling a hole in the boat, you just epoxy them to the inside of the hull and they read depth right through the fiberglass somehow? Are they any good? I had a transom mount on the old boat, but that won't work on the new boat because the Balanced rudder tucks under the keel skeg and would hit a transducer mounted there (the old boat didn't have the balanced rudder).

I converted one of the bass boat transom mount fishfinder transducers to shoot-thru-hull by building it a housing from a large PVC sewer cleanout fitted and glued to the interior of the hull. I add distilled water about once a year. Works fine. The original advertised depth range of 800' seems to now be about 525' in seawater. That's plenty to keep me off the rocks and shoals. I can still see any fish big enough to eat just fine.
I have a Standard Horizon ( ST40 ? )with the transducer that matches it. No complaints, except the bond with the hull leaks mineral oil a little. I think I should have used something different ( I used 3m 5200 ) to bond the transducer housing to the hull. There have been a few discusssions about this topic on the 250 forum if you search the archives you should get a lot of info. My GPS is seperate and handheld.

I considered the Garmin 168 but installed the Garmin 100 Blue. I plan a portable GPS that I can take flying and hunting. I intend the future GPS to interface my future tiller-pilot.
Shooting through the hull works well. I tested mine forward and aft of the keel. My temporary installation is aft under the quarterberth with the display on a short hatchboard when sailing. I used a plastic container cutout for the transducer and gooped to the floor with silicone. I add water to the container to permit the sound to penetrate any gaps.
I'm using a hummingbird, depth sounder, I glued the transducer to the hull with epoxy, in the area provided under the V berth, it works fine. Bill C250wb #134 Serendipity
