John's right. Isabel stirred up 20-30' seas for hundreds of miles, and was preceded by clouds that reached up here in CT when she hadn't yet made landfall in NC. That picture is a little cyclonic storm like we get along the coast from time to time, and it's probably viscious--50-60mph winds driving rain that feels and sounds like shotgun pellets. When it gets going, the seas will be flat black and foam, with the tops of the waves blown off. It's scary enough, but it isn't a hurricane.

Here is another wall cloud... taken on the last day of my 2002 cruise. Beyond the water spout... is a Great Lakes ore freighter with it's bow to left of the spout and the wheel house to the right.
Thanks for the correction! My father-in-law sent me these the other day... I did notice the calm sea state and thought the calm before the storm. I wonder who bothers to start this kind of thing? The site you referred me to John said the same photos were sent around for previous hurricanes too. Strange... Just goes to show there's lots of crap on the net! Fortunately not on OUR site!!!
