Catalina direct has a product called mast up....i think it is a telescoping pole that helps in stepping/unstepping the mast...any experience with this product?
I recently bought a new one and a used one. When I ask CD for the product the guy said "just a minute" and the next thing I knew Lowell was on the phone. He is the owner. He said that he wanted to personally explain to me that the people who make Mast-up have refused to make anymore of the Catalina 25 units. The Catalina 22 unit is all that is offered and that it would work fine if I ran a line from it to somewhere in my cockpit to reinforce it. He said that it was an ok solution but that he regretted that the original beefier unit was not available. I recived it and am very impressed with it. I will use it for the first time in a few weeks. I got two so that I can weld one on the front of my trailer and have adjustable support in the front and rear. That way I can have my storage tarp high enough to raise the pop-top during the winter if I want to. To me its ability to carry the mast while the boat is on the trailer is a bigger deal than the help raising the mast. The mast is not that big of a deal unless you have reached a time in your life when those kinds of weights are too much for you. I am close but not there yet.
I have one and use it every time I put up or lower the mast. It is a carrier for the mast while traveling and when extended gives you a head start on raising the mast. I always tie a piece of line (dock line) to it then to a cabin top winch. If you don’t secure it, even the "beefier" one, it will flex backwards when you roll the mast back to put the base on the tabernacle.
I just sold my C22 and kept the mast up. The problem is that the L shaped brackets which go into your gudgeon is sized for the smaller C22 gudgeons. Therefore you have some slop in it. I'm thinking of trying to find some kind of bushings for it. I do tie it off to my traveler crossbar for reinforcement. It is a great tool though. It really helps with the mast raising. I have an old set of C22 pintles from my old rudder and thought of attaching them to the mastup somehow, or maybe find some kind of L shaped bolt, kind of like a fence gate bracket. I wonder why they discontinued the C25 bracket production?
