Friday I left work at 4:15 and was sailing out the harbor by 5:15. By 5:30 I had 2 fishing lines in. The sea was calm with a nice gentle 3 foot swell. The winds were light, but just right for a peaceful sail. The sun was setting below a layer of cloud miles out to sea. Everything was colored orange. I was headed for a large flock of birds - pelicans, gulls, and terns that were crashing into the sea. Almost as soon as I lowered in the lines, I caught a fish. For 20 minutes I couldn't even sail. It was non stop fish. I had 4 barracuda, 2 bonita, a calico bass, and 2 mackerals. I was so excited I was screaming for joy. It started to get dark and I sailed in with the lights on (first night landing). Also, I sailed all the way into the slip. It was one of the most beautiful evenings I've ever spent on the water (so much better than sitting in Friday night traffic!)
Saturday I took my youngest daughter, Heidi for a day of sailing and fishing. Once again, we were treated to excellent weather and great fishing. We sailed about 6 miles to the La Jolla kelp. On the way we caught 8 bonita, including one triple (3 lines in, 3 fish on). Heidi boated 2 duruing that triple jig strike. In the afternoon I got a call from my new friend from this list. Heidi and I sailed in and met the owners of a 89 wing. We are hoping they get a slip on the L dock in Marina Village next to us and we can begin a C25/250 fleet in Mission Bay.
Sunday everything was different. I was sailing solo. The sky was grey all day and the wind was blowing. The seas were choppy and rough. I motored out of the fairway and hoisted sails. That was the last time I used the motor. I spent about 3 hours sailing around the bay, practicing tacking, gybing, running and reaching in the gusty winds. I've never had the boat heeling so much! Finally the winds were right for close reaching out of the bay without engine. I was taking green water over the bow and it was quite bumpy. I sailed out about 2 miles and dropped in my lines. I got an instant hookup of 2 more bonita. But it was so rough I really wasn't having fun. So I did an about course and sailed all the way back into the slip.
Then I spent the rest of the day cleaning up all the mess of 2 back to back 3 day weekends sailing (I'd estimate 25 hours on the water just in the last 2 weekends).
