Before I go any further......the opening port in the head leaks, not a drip, a stream. I hate opening ports. It does not leak around the rubber seal of the opening part itself. It leaks between the port frame and the plexiglass of the big window, right below the aft lockscrew. There is a little "gutter" in the outside of the frame. When pouring the "test-cup" the gutter pee's in a nice arc, untill at the end the water curles around the tip of the gutter, runs back and then into the seam between the bezel and the window frame. After that it appears inside as described above.
At first sight it appears to be another Catalina quality control issue...(the first indication of the level of care that the installer applied is the fact that the window is in crooked.)
Now, I've removed the screws and the window is not appearing to want to come out without a fight. Has anyone done this? Which godawful sealant is used here? (it appears gray) and how the heck do you get it out?
Mine was bedded with 5200... and it was a pain to remove. I used a very thin flexible putty knife sharpened to a good edge and pushed/tapped it to cut the sealant, walking around the port. Mask the window first and use patience. Some have reported a guitar string to work... the important point is thtat the sealant will have to be fully cut all around before the port will turn loose.
Window is out.......(with some minor persuasion)....in one piece I might add. My suspicion was correct. Not enough goop....damn Catalina. I'll clean it up and put it back in. Will report later. Filler piece? What filler piece? Mine came with two screens....
Mine came with one screen in a galley drawer. I installed it. Some time later, the port hinges failed. I complained and Catalina sent me a replacement. It also included a non installed screen. This time, while preparing to put the screen in... I noticed that there was a filler piece between the weather strippings where the screen goes.
I guessed that this might be necessary to providing a seal if the screen wasn't used. Sure enough, when I looked at my original, it had both the screen and the filler and was likely the cause of the hinge failures.
There was no documentation either with the screen in the drawer with my new boat... or with the replacement port. Others have had the hinges fail also... The problem is the filler piece needs removed when installing the screen.
Sorry, didn't mean to make you type all that.....I read your web page. (You could have known because you did not mention the filler piece in your first reply <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>) No filler piece came with the boat, installed or not, just two screens......
I cleaned up the window. (invested in some "release", not cheap but it works.) I have reinstalled it with copious amounts of goop. I put the screws in just enough to tighten it down a little. Will torque it down some more when it cures.
