Ihave just come back from the Long Beach Boat show and the comadore, wife, really liked the Catalina 25. In fact she liked it much better than our Mac M25. She even stated that she would feel safe going to Catalina in it. This is a BIG plus for me.
So here are the questions: 1) I do not have much confidence in the water ballast system, safety and handeling wise. How safe is this system and how well does the boat handle? 2) The model I was looking at was the wing keel version. The brochure states the wing keel is 3' 5" feet, so I figure I would need 4 - 5 feet of water just to get it to float off the trailer. Does anyone out there have a wing keel model and do they ramp launch it? If so, how difficult is it?

Steve, I am a little confused by your question. The Catalina "25" is no longer made, (production ended late 80's) and, to my knowledge, was never produced in a "water ballast" model. The Catalina "250" is the present Catalina 25 ft sailboat being produced. It does come in water ballast. Both, I believe are/were available in wing keel versions.
I do not have a wing keel version, so cannot answer Q1. I DO have a fixed keel C25 (1985), I think it is a great boat, and it is launched every spring on a boat ramp. Actually, my marina doesn't have a lift, so everything is launched on the ramp. It is no problem. I get in the boat, they back it in (on my cradle), it floats off (with a line on it), I start the motor, and BINGO! we're sailing! It works great. I have seen C25's launched off of trailers easily too. BTW, my full keel draws 4 ft. I doubt the wing keel draws any more.
