If you are an inland sailor you can replace them with a piece of sunbrella with snaps. Plexiglass works well if strength is not a concern. The lower board is narrow enough that plexiglass may be alright for it regardless.
Considering the use that the crib boards get, I would be concerned about the Plexiglass getting all scratched up. I am not familiar with foggy plexiglass, maybe you could sand it if it started to have too many scratches.
Our crib boards were thrashed when we got our boat, I just (carefully) ran them all through my thickness planer and they are as good as new.
