I have installed a Garmin 168 GPS/Sounder in tyhe new boat, and I was wondering about the electronic charts. The 168 can't use the pre-loaded memory ROM chips, so you have to download the charts from the CD to a computer, then download from the computer to the GPS unit. My questions are: just how much coverage do you get for the $169 price tag? How much area can the GPS unit's memory hold? I would want to get coverage for San Francisco Bay, Suisun Bay, and the Sacramento/San Joaquin River system. If I were to plan a route from Stockton or Rio Vista all the way to San Francisco, which is about 75 miles, would the GPS unit be able to hold all the data for this area, or would I have to repeatedly download successive portions of the route?

Get a larger chip than you think you want. I believe I bought a 32 mb chip, not sure.....I use if for the blue charts in my area, and also for the land data in the car. I had to pick and choose some areas and wish I had the next bigger chip now.
