Recently bought a new Nissan 8HP 2 cycle long shaft electic start for my old C-25 swinger. The new engine has enough power, but does not have as much thrust as the '85 Yamaha 9.9 high thrust engine it replaced. The new engine came with a 7.5" pitch prop. Nissan has an optional prop with a 6.5" pitch (same diameter as the 7.5" one). How much difference would the optional prop make? Smooth sailing and thanks in advance. Gary

I understand that a smaller # is better and that we should all be using a 5. Remember there are a lot of prop companies out there.
It won't match your Yamaha, because the diameter is smaller and you have less torque driving it, but 6.5 should perform better on your boat. How much better? About this much... You'll use slightly higher RPMs to cruise at any given speed, but you'll get a little more thrust to stop, start, and maneuver around a dock or trailer.
Gary, I'd be interested in an evaluation report of your new ob. I thinking either Nissan 8 or 9.8, 2 stroke, extra long shaft. Any input you could give would be appreciated.
Gary, I bought a new prop with 6.5" pitch for my 8hp Nissan. It does make manoevering in close quarters at low revs much easier. The factory rep told me it would add about 200 rpm's at cruising speed. Derek
Don, I've only had my Nissan 8HP on the boat for a couple months, but I like it so far . It has enough power to push the boat into a stiff breeze and a good chop. With the long shaft I get a little cavitation in a stiff chop or a big wake (love them stinkpots), but I've just been lowering the motor to the first stop. The motor is very easy to start with either the pull cord or electric start and the controls are easy to reach. Weight was the main reason I choose this particular outboard. At 70 lbs. it's MUCH EASIER and SAFER to raise, lower, and tilt than my old 4-stroke. My boat balances better, too. On the downside it's quite a bit noiser than a 4-stroke and low speed maneuvering is not so hot. Based on the feedback I've gotten here, I'm gonna order the lower pitch prop. I bought the motor from onlineoutboards and received it within a week. Don, hope this helps 'cause I'm tired of typing. Gary on the "Renegade"
