Hi, we had 5 delicious days off here in San Diego. Friday I took my 70-something father and step mother sailing, along with my wife and 2 daughters. My dad had never sailed. We had a nice warm day with winds about 10. We served lunch underway and I sailed under main only to keep the tacks easy with a full cockpit. In the afternoon we hit some gusts and had the boat up to 5 knots (main alone)!

Today I had the first good day with decent winds to try the new genoa. I love it. Everything was working fine, and in light air, I was passing C250s like they were standing still. Of course they were rental boats with 110 genoas but even so I was making 3.5 knots to theri 2 knots and outpointing them by 10 degrees.

I don't know if it was because they just didn't know how to sail or because I was using all my light air sail adjustments to the max - slacked halyards, slacked outhaul, slacked backstay, moved genoa blocks back, my new sail has tell tails so I can get the headsail adjusted just right. I was also sitting forward and to leeward. I had a big belly in the main with the traveller all the way to windward.

In the evening I had a great visit with a fellow Association member who took me up on my offer to drop in anytime you're visiting San Diego. Thanks for the company, NuNees, and I only wish you could have made it earlier to appreciate sailing past those 250s!

When you are fully tuned and sitting on the low side, forward with a tiller exstension in your hand; isn't it amazing how intense 5mph is!

Try it without the outboard running. ( Sorry couldn't pass it up ) Really though its great when it all fits into place and all goes well. I know your sailing area and its nice. I envy your weather at the moment.

Keep this in mind in case Gary and I ever get it together and get a fleet going here, and perhaps one day host the Nationals. There are numerous available C-250s (and C-22s) to rent right here in Mission Bay. People who can't trailer here can rent a boat.

We could have a special class for racing the rental boats. SInce they are all identically prepared, it would be a test of your skill alone (sort of like the IROC car races).




By the way, the guys in the 2 boats I passed did look like novices. Even I could see (in one of them at least) that their main wasn't trimmed correctly. However, I can't underestimate the difference a new genoa makes (plus one with tell tails).


I barely ran the outboard all day. 5 minutes getting out of the slip and that was it (sailed back in).

Several years ago my wife and I rented Capri 22 on Mission Bay and an enjoyable aftrnoon sailing there. It is a great place to sail, and San Diego would be a great place for a Nationals. If the emerging San Diego Fleet is ready, hosting the next west coast Nationals, projected to be 2008, I think, Y'awl would have a great venue.

Renting a Catalina for 3 to 4 days in Mission Bay, can there be a different area each day to sail at and how about
name for one of those companys.

sounds like a fun thing to do in a beautiful city

Otherwise, if you want to rent a C-22 or C-250, Seaforth Boat Rentals is the place:

By the way, Seaforth also has Catalina 270, 320, 360, Merit 25, C-25, and all the Capris. C-250 is $42/hr.

You could rent one day in Mission Bay and sail in formation with me to La Jolla, explore, Pt. Loma, sail all around Mission Bay, and more.

You could rent the next day in San Diego Bay and explore this huge bay, sail to Hotel del Coronado or explore the Coronado Islands (14 miles offshore).

I just got back into town ... thanks for inviting me to join you. I enjoyed meeting you and seeing your boat, and sharing my pictures with you. I, too, regreat not being able to sail. Unfortunately, I could not take advantage of the rentals boats. BTW I was on the Star of India Tuesday morning about 10:45...missed agsain!
