I took my first sail for the new year last Friday, the weather was great with temps in the upper 60's with a little to much wind. The main was reefed and the genoa was greatly rolled in. While looking at the set fo the jib it looked like I had a tear in it, so I promptly rolled it in. When I got back to the dock I discovered that the stitiching has come un-done on the leech. That goodness there was not a tear. My problem is that I have never used a sail loft and do not know how to find a good one. I know of one that is about 60 miles a way but do not know of its reputation. Does anyone have any suggestions as to where one could send a sail for repair?

Thanks

Jim

Where are you located?

If the stitching just came out, you may try sewing it up yourself.

I have made some fairly sizeable repairs to my old sails using an ordinary home sewing machine. Sewing a seam that has come undone doesn't require expertise, and would be an easy repair. However, I would only do a major sail repair if the sail was an older one. I would have a sailmaker do the job to my newer sails or to a sail that is in excellent condition, only because it would look a little better. My local sailmaker is fairly reasonable on his prices, but sometimes it takes awhile for him to get to it. Don't be afraid to give it a try.

The Genoa on my C 250 while wrapped up on the furler tore, two years ago while we were on vacation. Doyle Sails repaired the sail, restitched some questionable seams, washed and dried the sail and put new tell tales on. I paid $160 for all that. Not sure it was a bargain but the sail was six years old at that point. The wash and new tell-tales made it look like new. I hope it lasts another five years. Hopefully this helps in makeing your decision. "Bear" on the hard in upstate N.Y. +14 degrees and wind blowing 25 mph, gusting to 30.

Jim,

I agree with those who have suggested fixing it yourself. A loose leech tape should be an easy repair. The more difficult home repairs involve broadseaming (requiring both math and precision), thick multi-layer corner patches, and machine stitching so far out in the middle of a large sail that it's nearly impossible to shove the rolled up bulk under the arm of a typical home sewing machine.

That said, I've found sail lofts around my area that are very inexpensive and fast.
