Our club is participating in a cup race against another sailing club, in March. That club, because it currently has the cup, sets the rules, and has specified head to head racing between four different designs, one of which is the tall rig Catalina 25.

will it be match racing? some clubs have set handicaps for roller furling. i think i read somewhere that a furling gets 5 to 10 seconds a mile. i'll try to find the article. otherwise remove the furler and borrow someones new head sail.

Hi Spence,

Technically, roller furling is a mechanism that's most often added around the forestay rather than replacing the forestay. Hence, it doesn't really modify the standing rigging, and would then comply with the rules.

Rick - on Canyon Lake we give 12 secs extra handicap for roller furling - either for the jib or the main - and quite honestly it is inadequate to "level the playing field" (which is why we have a Cruiser fleet for the "furlers" and the non-furlers run Non

Thank you all for the help. If we can borrow the appropriate sails, we will remove the furler, but if unsuccessful, and we must run the boat, we will take the position that the boat, furler equipped, still meets one design specs.
