I am sending this message for two reasons. First, I wanted to test the instructions that Buzz Maring graciously supplied for creating photos in Shutterfly, the n posting them in a message. Also wanted to share my success with the solar panel (5 watt West Marine #1684489 $70 bucks. The mount is home made). The panel keeps a trickle charge on my batteries and works well. http://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/47b4dc39b3127cceb89c34bfe0610000001610
'Glad your photo worked ... the solar panel looks great!
BTW, you mentioned that the mount is "home made" ... how did you make it? It looks like your mount could be used for other applications as well ... I'd like to know more about it.
Looks like a cool set up. How is it hooked up, and what do you expect to accomplish with it? What problems do you expect? What about birds using for resting or other things?
Thanks for the replies. To answer: 1. A friend of mine is a machinist extraordinaire. We mounted the panel on an 1/8" aluminum plate. Then using blocks of Delrin and a short piece of PVC pipe we attached the rig to the vertical tubing of the stern handrail. I'll try to get some more pictures.
2. As to the electrical part, I ran the two-conductor cable from the solar panel around the stern railing and down to the batteries with a one amp fuse in the line. (The batteriess are already connected in parallel). I leave the starboard battery area open to minimize any potential hazard from hydrogen buildup when I'm away. When we sail I disconnect the panel.
