My name is Linda, I am pretty new to this, and I have an early 1990's Johnson 8.0 Sailmaster outboard.
It has a pull-start engine, and I usually have problems starting it and changing gears, since it is difficult for me to find the "start" and "idle" position in the throttle .
The signs in the throttle are worn out and I can't find them.
The throttle also seems to have a little knob at the end
The previous owner didn't have the manual. Can anybody help me and tell me where these positions are supposed to be, and if the object at the end of the throttle is actually a knob and its function
I bought a boat with an old Johnson also, I took the cover off, (the latch is in the back) and it let me see the linkage that controlled the shift lock out. I then could twist the throtle and see the linkage line up so the gears would shift. While the twist grip is in the location that allows the linkage to line up I put a mark on the handle that crosses over from the twist part to the stock. If you look at old engines you will almost always see these marks.
I have a 1988 sailmaster 8 and everything is worn also. The start position is about 10 degrees of open throttle from idle stop (throttle turned full clockwise) and the button on the end of the throttle is the kill switch. Without the key to hold the kill switch up the engine will not start no matter where you put the throttle. On my engine if you open the throttle to a point just past the start position when you pull the starter rope it will make a grinding shound like stripping gears. If you open the throttle past this point you cannot pull the starter rope at all. The engine locks it out. When I shift gears I just put the engine in idle move the shifter and then crank up the throttle. Hope some of this helps since your engine is newer the button on the end of the throttle could, as Old Salt says, be a low speed idle adjustment. The question to answer: is it a knob or a button. Knob = idle adj.: button = kill switch.
I experienced many of the same questions when we got our 1986 Sailmaster. If you can find the serial number, you can probably take it to any Johnson parts dealer and have them order you the manual. That's what I did. Cost maybe $10.00. Well worth it. Good luck.
