I'm the current owner of La Paloma, a 2000 Catalina 250 wing keel, hull #449. I bought her in Spring 2002. I've taken her on two trips so far. In 2002 I sailed in the San Juan and Gulf Islands for about five weeks. In 2003 I sailed from Anacortes, Washington to Glacier Bay, Alaska and back to Prince Rupert, British Columbia via The Inside Passage for about three and a half months. Actually it was some sailing and a fair bit of motoring! I did both trips about half single handing and half with someone. Both trips were great experiences for me and I plan to return to these areas again. I have been on boats since my childhood and have been sailing since 1986. I have previously owned smaller trailer sailors which I have sailed on California lakes and bays and in the San Juan and Gulf Islands. I have also crewed on 32 to 60 foot sailboats in Canada, The Bahamas, The Carribean and along the west coast between California and Costa Rica. Basically I love sailing, especially extended cruising.
I'm excited to have found this site. I just joined last night and have already read lots of interesting comments. I enjoy modifying and outfitting my boat to suit my needs. I've done a bit of that so far and have many, many pages and sketches and ideas of additional things I want to do. Living on the boat for the two trips I've taken has given me lots of time and opportunities to dream up more projects than I will ever complete! I look forward to being a part of this online community, reading about the things others have done, sharing in the problem solving and just talking about boats. I'm fairly new to this web stuff so I dont know how much I'll participate, but my heart is with all those who love the water.
Well, I wanted to say hello and tell you about me, and I've done that. I'll end with my favorite poem about sailing by Ferenc Mate(sp?)
There's more to sailing than cleats and winches or ropes and bulging sails
There are far away places, the ever changing light, the incredible silence and a great peace at the bottom of your soul
Welcome, Welcome I am glad that there will be one more person out there to humor me with my newbie questions. I look forward to your posts. I know Gary B. will put it much more eloquent than I, BUT, have you considered the Nationals in Portland this year on your way to the San Juans? Check out the sticky post at the top of this page.
The trip up the Inside Passage to Southeast Alaska is something I dream about doing when I retire in a few years. I know that there is a section of the route, north of Vancouver Island, that requires a 150 mile passage in the open ocean across Queen Charlotte Sound. What is this like in a small boat? I have read that the weather can turn from calm to full-gale storm conditions, deadly to small craft, in just a few hours out there. Also, are there places to provision and buy fuel on those remote parts of the B.C. coast?
Welcome John! And WOW that's quite a cruise on a C250! I'm sure I'm not the only one who would like to hear the details. I have The Inside Passage on my "places to visit" list , but never considered sailing it myself. Hmmm.
