I was invited to crew this year but can't make it. A coulpe of us in our club are considering putting together a team for next year. Probably take one of the J/24's. Sounds like more of a party than a race, from what I've read.
We might also race the San Carlos Regatta...my boat, probably. Heavier boat for the Sea of Cortez.
Indiscipline III, then named Jo Ann, raced in this race, taking 12th place overall in the cruisers "C" class. Last year's race was won by a 25 year old Cal 25, which corrected out over all the big boys (Pyewacket, etc.)
I am also interested in doing this some year, as well as the "2 Around". This is 2 sailors per boat around Catalina Island. In the Cruising Class (where the C25 belongs) you don't circumnavigate the entire island, just Newport and around Ship Rock. It's a 24 hour (overnight) race.
IMHO C25s (with spinnakers) are well suited and competitive for these offshore PHRF races.
Way back in the late 70's I raced Confetti in a couple of these races. GREAT fun. Can end up being more of a 125 mile long party than a race actually!! Amazing to see that many boats in such a small space!! I think they used to use 3 or more starting lines just to get everyone started in a reasonable amount of time! Nice to be able to trailer back north, but the trip back is not so bad really...... I agree that a Catalina 25 under a chute is able to sail to her rating without a LOT of extra effort! Thats one reason I bought Confetti! We used to use what was called the "Mexican Rig" (Main, Spinnaker, Blooper and tallboy staysail). The "blooper" is a drifter with leech and foot strings that allow you to pucker up the sail a lot. Sorta based on the old Hild "drift-o-matic" sail. Fun and easy to make it.
Hard part was to end up with enough halyards! I ended up attaching a bullet block to the spinnaker halyard snapshackle (along with the spinnaker) and hoisting it with a halyard running through it, andused that for the tall boy.
Have fun guessing whether to stay inside or go outside! That was always a crap shoot!
I have not raced in the San Carlos Race. Sounds fun though.... We raced a friend's 35 ft boat in the Long Beach to La Paz Race (9 days, ended up having to survive hove to in 85kt winds one afternoon/night as a Pacific hurricane came up the Baja. The Sea of Cortez is simply BEAUTIFUL!!!! 60ft deep water so clear that you feel like you are in a low flying airplane! Watch out for the heavy duty tides!!! LOTS of current that local knowledge really helps on!
