The VHF antenna on the boat (1980 C-25) I bought never worked. I'm trying to replace it while I'm doing other mast work. Can someone out there tell me what the three connectors are on the adapter that on the bottom of the mast. It screws into the deck. I see white/black/grey. Is the grey a ground? Do I need to do anything with it? I only see a standard VHF coax connector for radio which would make two of the three pins?
Also, any advise on whether or not to mount an FM antenna at the mast top? It seems like a perfect place but when I spoke to the local marine supply store person in regard to what type of wire to use to run to the radio, he had no idea.
let me answer your second question first. you can use your masthead VHF antenna for FM. you need a splitter that allows you to use the one antenna for both. You can see one on page 168 of the new WM catalogue.
A coax plug has only one prong so the three prong "female"? I'm assuming that is what you have on deck may be for your mast lighting. There are three lights on the mast. The anchor light which is at the top, the steaming light which is near the spreaders and in the same unit is the spreader light. You can check out the lights by using a multi meter to check the power from your deck plug. Is there no matching 3 prong "male" on the mast? you may have to do a re-wiring of the mast. give us a more detailed description of what you have. On my 77 there is a 4 prong plug that gives me control of each light on a separate switch.
I also have a '80 version C-25, I agree with John that what you are looking at on deck is the 12v supply for the mast lights. At that time Catalina used Black to denote ground. I am in the process of wiring my mast for VHF. I'm using RG-8X (mini)for the run. I've ordered a fitting from Catalina Direct (http://www.catalinadirect.com/)that will allow me to run the antenna cable throug the deck and have a disconnect below deck where it is dry. The fitting is designed to allow me to pass the connector through the deck when I drop the mast.
Scott, I don't know about your C25 model, but my '87 tall rig had a 1/2 plastic tube riveted to the inside of the mast to protect your mast wiring, I would guess from halyard chafe. Anyway, when I installed my RG-8 coax cable, I ran it down inside of this tube using one of my upper shrouds to run it down with. It's been secure and trouble free for 15 years.
