Last fall I had occasion to drive from Missoula, Montana to Glacier National Park - a stunning September trip - and was intrigued by the lovely water called Flathead Lake, some 30 miles tip to tip, just south of Kalispell. I was on a tight schedule, couldn't stop, and it was at the end of sailing season, but there were several marinas hauling out boats; has anyone here spent time on Flathead?

"Cruising World" magazine had an article on Flathead Lake a couple years ago, unfortunately my archives are incomplete. As a former resident of Montana, I can attest to the state's stunning natural beauty. The limit of my sailing experience in Montana is spending a couple hours becalmed on a resevoir in a C25, so I'm not much help here. I would note that Lake Pend Oreille (pond-O-ray) in Idaho is similarly beautiful and only a couple hours further west. Apparently, one can also sail in Yellowstone Lake in the national park of the same name as well.

IMHO, all of this country is just plain drop dead gorgeous until one gets east of Billings, MT, aka West Dakota.

Rueben,
Our drive up through the Canadian Rockies in July, 2001, was unforgettable. While returning to the states via the "Highway to the Rising Sun"' , I noticed McDonald Lake and Flathead Lake as possible scenic detours, and after a quick consultation with the Admiral, we were on course for "sensory overload". I did stop at one of the marinas (located in a refurbished bank) and walked the docks. Beautiful boats: some Catalina 25's-38's, a few Beneteaus, but all were immaculate. We get dust storms from the Utah deserts and plenty of bugs and migratory bird residue (do), and these boats were impressively clean. I have more pics, if you would like to share your e-mail address. Come on Spring.
