Calling all West Coast Cruisers! Who is planning to do a cruise in the San Juans this summer, or go to the C-25 Nationals in Portland, or both? If so, what date period are you looking at? I am trying to see if there is a preference among the various potential attendees, for the first two weeks in July, the last two weeks in July, or some other date like in June or August. Personally, I am leaning toward leaving home on Friday, July 2, and arriving in Bellingham the next day, cruise around the San Juans to Tuesday July 13, then head back, stopping in Portland for the Nationals from the 14th-17th, then home on the 18th. This schedule includes a State holiday on July 5th, so I save a day of vacation time. But I want to go with as large a group as possible, so if the majority is leaning towards the last two weeks of July, I'll do that. Since it's likely that different crews will have different itineraries, do we want to plan a specific day to have a full-group Rendezvous? I would propose Ganges for this, as it has a big anchorage, and a town with some retaurants and other services. Sidney is also a good candidate, although getting marina slips for a large group might not be possible in July when it's most crowded. I have been told that Friday Harbor is nice too, but I haven't been there myself so don't know what they have there in the way of facilities. It is only 15 weeks until the Portland Nationals, which isn't a whole lot of time to plan this. Can't wait! The San Juans is such a great place to "mess about in boats"!

I'm taking off July 2 - 7 and am woking on getting my Father and Father-in-Law out for a cruise to Victoria and around the San Juans. I'd meet up with you for a day or so. If I can't get them out I may just drag a cournterpatart from work out with me.
Larry, We will be leaving for the San Juans after attending the Nationals. We haven't come up with an itinerary yet. The only sure thing is that the wife has requested Buchart Gardens on July 24 for the Fireworks Display. We will be in Todd Inlet that day. We will start hammering out more definate plans soon. It would be nice to visit with Ken and Betsy Cave while in the islands. Stewart Island is a good place for a gathering. There are floating docks to tie up to and is not far from Sydney. We will keep in touch. You can contact me at edlo765@aol.com.
Larry, We are planning on the San Juan/Gulf islands just after the nationals and possibly trailering up to Vancouver for a little while also. Specifics are up in the air at this point but the fireworks display sounds interesting. Sounds like maybe two groups will need to coordinate (one before and one after the nationals).
Plan 'A' this year was to trailer to the nationals then go on up to the San Juans... it's still in the realm of possibility, but now it looks like we're getting a puppy in June. (Bluetick Hound) If that doesn't happen, the San Juans trip is still in the cards. I may also consider a trip to the nationals only sans spouse... gotta make up my mind soon.
If we get the pup, we'll probably be making a shorter 'cruise', probably Clear Lake (Ca.) for a long weekend and maybe a few days on Shasta later on in the summer. I like sailing.. but I sure like puppies too!
Dragging the boat out of Humboldt County is quite a chore... there are only two semi-decent routes out of here.. down highway 101 to 20 and over to I-5... or up the Oregon coast to Coos Bay and over to I-5.
Clam, a little off the thread subject (sorry) but how is the sailing at shasta? we are first year sailors in medford and shasta seemed like a no brainer but i havn't heard of anyone going there, only talk about whiskey town. also, what are the sailing opportunities in humbolt bay?

Scott... Shasta doesn't have a great reputation as a sailing venue... the winds can be 'fluky' due to the canyons, there's lots of waterski traffic etc. But that doesn't mean you can't have a lot of fun there. I think of it mostly as a general'recreational' opportunity. Just poke around, live aboard a bit and explore the many 'arms' of the lake.
Whiskeytown, on the other hand, is noted for good winds.. they almost uniformly blow one way in the morning... then reverse and blow you back the other way in the afternoon. Downside is that they won't let you overnight on the lake, so you've got to stay ashore. It is a very pretty spot though.
Humboldt Bay is almost like a small version of San Francisco Bay. Summertime brings cool foggy mornings that give way to sparkling afternoons with 10 to 25kt winds. Tidal currents can be substantial so they are always factored into your sailing plans.
There are only a couple decent recreational anchorages out on the bay. In a good year though, salmon are abundant on the bar and just outside on the ocean.
A little further down I-5 you can hit Oroville to the East and the Sacramento River Delta... And of course, the ultimate California sailing venue, SF Bay.
Larry, here’s our very loose itinerary and time line as it stands now. It’s always subject to change due to whims and interests and we’re open to meeting up with anyone along the way.
7-22 & 7-23 Up I-5 To Bellingham, WA
7-24 Sucia Island (Echo Bay or Fossil Bay)
7-25 through 8-3 Canadian Gulf Islands: (Customs at Bedwell) Otter Bay Wallace Island Ganges Montegue Telegraph Harbour Maple Bay Sidney
8-4 through 8-7 US San Juan Islands (Customs at Roche) Roche Harbor Stuart and/or Jones Island Friday Harbor ???????????????
Sure would love to see you include the Nationals in Portland, July 15, 16, 17. It might be quite awhile before they are back on the Left Coast. It will be a gas, with 20-30 C25s rendezvous-ed for fun racing...socializing and learning more about our boats....Moorage is free.
Gosh, Ken, are you sure you can drive right by on your way up to Bellingham and not stop????. BTW: Ever checked out Anacorte's Cap Sante as a departure site? The $30 round trip sling is pretty inviting.....
