It has been 1.8 years since my spouse was laid off from a high tech job as a systems engineer in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. All 18 of her co-workers were "reduced" as well, and only 2 have found jobs, both out of state. We have no debt other than the house, but if she does not find a job soon, I will be forced to sell the boat. It is hard to explain to the kids that we can keep the luxuries when we can't afford basic cable TV!
The job market here is very bad, and we may be forced to relocate, causing us the sell the boat, also.
Out of desperation, does anyone know of any high tech job openings in the Dallas Fort Worth, Texas area? She has BS in computer science, and is a ASQ software certified engineer.
same thing happened to me and I ended up working in IT for the County of San Diego. Give your city and County governments a try. It's a long process to get in, but once you do it's not a bad job.
Please spare me and the rest of the forum the political advertising!
There's enough of that BS in 'the real world.' I come to the forum to relax, learn and 'cyber-sail.' I don't want to log on and find reasons to raise my blood pressure. We all have opinions on many aspects of life. The only opinions I am concerned about on this forum are in regards to our boats and their use.
If the "DC" in "DC_Sailor" refers to Washington, I can understand your assumption that it would be OK to mention politics in 'most any social context. These folks don't usually bite so hard.
Thanks Bren, Yes, I too have been guilty in the past of injecting my political views on this post. I see the value of leaving them out of this list. I have been laid off in the past in the construction industry (my former occupation), both as management, and as a carpenter. It hurts. It really messes with your mind. I hope that Frank V's wife finds a great job really soon. A few years ago I was offered an anesthesia job in Austin, and I fell in love with the city, but the salary was too low, and I had a mountain of anesthesia school debt to pay off, and still do, so I didn't move to Austin. So if we leave out political bickering and send some positive energy, or prayers if you will, to Frank's wife, I'm sure it will be of greater benefit.
I was thinking the same thing. . . doesn't post for "a couple of years" but takes the time to drop a political terd into this happy little forum. . . hmmmmmmmmm. . . guess it's just the cynical Texan showing in me again. . . Maybe it's like the 'Baby Ruth' in the pool scene from 'Caddy Shack' all over again. Just wanting to get a reaction?
Wow, that hand granade had even more bang than saying Hunter or McGregor or "My WB is faster than your WK"....I'll have to remember that if I ever want to stir the pot during the winter doldrums...
In all seriousness, a strict no politics policy is what will protect sailing as the sanctuary that it is for most of us.
Back to the issue please. Frank, there was a post a couple of years ago from someone in a similar postion. The boat was paid for and I think they put it in storage till new jobs were found instead of selling. They said the occasional sail in those tight times really made a difference in the sanity level. when the new job came they were very happy they kept the boat instead of selling it for a few bucks.

Good luck and I hope the new job comes quick. - Matt</font id="blue">
Frank ... I agree with Matt on this one. If you really like your boat (and it sounds like you DO), maybe you could store her on a trailer or cradle for a while. Just having a boat is a good distraction ... you can work on it, keep her cleaned up and ready to go, and you can even "camp out" in it (just ask Oscar ).
I'm in the same situation right now. I'm in mourning over having to take my boat out of the water, but at least I've still got her ... and I'm going keep her 'til someone pries her from my cold dead fingers.
I hope things work out for y'all ... best of luck!
I noticed that when you click on DC Sailor's name for contact info, it is blank. Is this because he is one of those cowardly creeps that likes to drop some political, unsubstantiated sound bite, offer no solution, then hide in anonymity?
Notice the lack of ideas or help for Frank's dilemna.
Then he gets his little feelings hurt and says "WOW- You guys are too high-strung for me." Don't bother to check back in a couple of years, DC, unless you grow up.
Frank, I know that Raytheon is hiring in Dallas. You may want to contact the President of their Electronic Component Division, Dennis Reed. He will remember my name and company name (Affinity Partners) as I did work for him when he ran ITT MilAero in Santa Ana, CA. Also if your wife is a SixSigma person, she could call the Raytheon SixSigma Institute and ask for Larry Makal. He is at 781-522-3397. Larry can direct her to the right contact.
Just an observation... It's best to ignore things such as the DC Sailor post, rather than turn the thread into a hostile place with all the replies. You're playing into his/her hand. Ignore....
I appreciate your suggestions and advise. I know it is not really a full "boat" topic, but if we can't find her something, I won't be able to enjoy it anymore..
Thanks for all fo your concerns and suggestions. This is a great group of people!

What can make the forum hostile is if people make comments that make half the members of the forum seethe with anger. If you ignore posts like that, people will think it's O.K., and one person will make a comment, another will make a nasty comment in reply, and it will go on like that, back and forth. If you don't tell them politics are verboten, how are they going to know?
If D.C. Sailor would rather talk sailing than politics, I hope he continues to participate. Since he hasn't participated in our forum for awhile, it's certainly not his fault that he didn't know.
Obviously politics on this forum is more of a hot button topic today than in the past. Certainly, current occupation, geographic location and employment status would make some more sensitive to political commentary than others. Considering Frank's situation (and apparently others) it seems completely natural for some comments to slip through the cracks. I'm equally guilty here (though I do try put a humorous spin on it.) But, yes, as with everything else in life, it's better to put a positive spin on it so as not to get bogged down by the negative. Maybe we could/should add a brief statement near the forum header asking participants to avoid certain topics?
