After reading this forum for a year I have learned more about working on and sailing my boat than from all other sources combined. Thanks so much to the experts, your knowledge and willingness to share it has been invaluable. I finally received my adjustable backstay from Catalina Direct today(it only took five weeks , I'll save my CD venting for another post). I assume the new, second chainplate in the kit will be installed relative to the existing chainplate. However, I would rather not go under the rubrail and notch into the transom like the original. Would it work to use spacers and longer bolts and mount over the rubrail? I've done some major projects on the boat lately and would like to sail again someday . Thanks, Craig.
This is also one of my projects for the year. I really think that you need to put it under the rubrail for cosmetic as well as for function. However, for me at least, this project should not hold up the sailing. I will rig with the single backstay and work on getting the second chainplate attached as I go, a lttle today, some more tomorow... Maybe by the end of the season it will be mounted and then I can swap the backstay. In other words, do it right or do it later. Also, take a look at this tech tip,
