I was discussing chartplotting on the Precision forum and made aware of a new site for charts that might be of interest to those seaking charts online.
Charts can be downloaded easily and quickly.
They are priced quite reasonable.
They can be bought in several ways; individually, coast packs or quantity discounts.
Ten can be purchased at discount for example and downloaded whenever a need for a chart exist. Cost for ten is $45
Upgrades are free for a year. I've all ready received notification that two that I bought were upgraded and should be downloaded again.
The charts are easily imported to most chartplotting software packages and are precalibrated for the various programs. I use OziExplorer and the charts work immediately. All charts downloaded to a directory can be batch imported for painless integration.
I had trouble with one chart, a very large chart of all of Lake Huron, North Channel and the Georgian Bay. I noted some of my waypoints were on dry land...something was wrong. I emailed an inquiry and got a reply with instructions to the fix within two hours from the tech rep. This chart and several Alaskan area charts used polyconic projection instead of mercator and I simply needed to define the chart properly in my charting software. No problem.
A neet feature of the site is that if sections of a larger chart are needed, they can easily be defined and purchased which will give a larger resolution chart of the section needed.
Thanks for the tip(s) Arlyn; I've just started researching the comm/nav/weather 'lectronic doodads and goodies, and those look like two good low cost options.
I'm hoping others will share their favorites, tips, clues and hints (I can use plenty hehe) regarding:
Communications: Is anything beyond basic VHF and a cell phone needed? Any caveats regarding these two?
Navigation: GPS and electronic charts, onboard PC usage, etc.
Weather: anyone use an SSB weatherfax? Is this reasonable? What about wireless PC access?
I suppose if I were real hard core, I do all my navigating with a sextant and sundial. But then I wouldn't be here availing myself of all your experience either!
Any info would be appreciated ... quite likley I've missed some threads in the archives, and I Know there are other outside sources you know about that I don't.
A site I like is Maptech. You can view charts free online and save them to your computer or email them to someone.
On Marineplanner you can (or could last year anyway) view charts online and can even make up a "trip-tick" of waypoints. I found it very useful when planning our one-week cruises, particularly if I needed a better look at a particular harbor than my chart book provided.
I'll have to try Maptech too.
(waiting for my new jib to get done so I can go sailing)
