I understand the purple folder denotes a new topic. Is there any way to see if there are new responses to a topic (other than to look at the last post date)?

Scroll to the bottom half of the sign-on page (ie. the "All Forums" page) to the "Statistics" section. In the third line of the Statistics section there is a link that takes you to "ac
