Finally joined the association. Thought I would celebrate by asking a question.

I replaced my mast wiring last year and used 14 gauge down to a three prong deck connector. This provides power to the mast light (aka anchor light) and the bow light. I now have to replace the bow light due to a bosun chair/spouse incident. I want to use a combo bow light.deck light. (10w bow shooting out, and 20w shooting down. two bulbs). I know the correct way to install is to rewire the mast with a 4 wire and replace the deck connector with a four wire. Instead can I wire both bulbs on the bow/deck combo light using the same 14 guage. Even though it would be controlled by one switch, it would sure make life easy.

Thanks in advance.

You're not going to tease us with "bosun chair/spouse incident" without sharing the details are you? This site is like Las Vegas Brent, what happens here stays here .

There's a wire gauge/length calculator at this link:

Hi Brent...Welcome to the association.

I don't know if I would run both lights off one switch because with both lights on, your night vision will be greatly diminished and you'll be increasing your electrical usage unnecessarily.

Oh, and like Steve, I too want to hear about this bosun chair/spouse incident!

Brent,
Run and hide. Don't listen to these people asking you about details of the incident. Just think of the incident that would happen if your wife just happens to look at your reply. Better to let the inquisitive mind paint their own pictures of what happened.

Hi brent,
I did the same conversion last year.
As a temp fix till I could run a new wire back to panel and install another switch. I put a switch on the harness just above the deck plug to switch between either light.
I wouldn't tie the two together permenantly because you don't want your deck spot on while your motoring at night. As was stated it is really hard to see through it. And you need a steamer light.

Thanks for the reply everyone. I can see the old deck light wire below the deck connector. (the anchor, bow, and ground are in use). The piece I can see is very hard to get to. If I can connect to it with a splice, I think I will run a wire up to the deck/bow combo. If not I will try the switch at the mast base. Thanks seems like a nice compromise.

I do not want to go into the details of the incident since I am still in the process of attempting to deny it. If I have to admit it was my fault, I need to come up with a valid reason as to why it occurred. What I can tell you is that if your spouse is hanging from the mast in a bosun chair, (I do have rock solid standing rigging) and your boat is in the slip, DO NOT step off the boat to retrieve an icy beverage from the cooler. This causes a "thether ball" effect and can result in lights being kicked. However, if you do step off the boat while said spouse is dangling from the mast, even at spreader level, make sure the reason is to save a small animal from drowning. (I am still trying to sell this version, I will let you know how it goes).

Thanks for the help,
Brent

I once again agree with Don - though I have used the deck light as a quasi steaming light in an emergency. (not legal but at least I had some kind of light) -- you want to have those lights wired separately. Night vision is just one of the many reasons.

As for the bosuns chair incident - you can always take the approach of "I know this guy in the marina who ........

You must have a wonderful wife. Mine won't go near a bosun's chair, much less let me pull her up "that pole."
