Someone posted a nifty tip on Sailnet claiming that leaving scented dryer sheets in lockers, etc. discourages spiders from living in them. You Michigan folks with the spider invasions now have a secret weapon. You'll also have the best-smelling boats in the fleet..

I recently read in a sailing magazine to leave a 1 lb. coffee can 1/2 full of moth balls in the cabin, just put the plastic lid on when you are on board. This has worked great in central Texas. After discussing this with others they said they leave a few moth balls in a old sock in thier sails to keep out the bugs,

A few years ago we were invaded by a new species from Asia (falling off trucks with produce....coming your way....) Stink bugs, love to crawl into crevices in fabric, tarps, SAILS.....In fall they all crawl into stuff, in spring they come out..I found about fifty in the boat last fall.....

If it's folded and you haven't used it in a while, shake it out outside first.......

Nothing repels them.......the good news is, that in spite of their name I haven't smelled anything yet, and they are very slow.

Admire the little bugger here:

Doug,
In Texas the Moths are HUGE, so we just kill 2-3, cut the balls out and that will fill the 1 lb. can Since cutting calves in Texas is a daily thing, Moths are simple...the rest of the time we sail

Now Steve out here in California we got these Basque sheep hearders, I had a kid of one of them in my jr. high science class a few years ago, that do the same thing with sheep, but they use their teeth to cut the dang things off. Ever heard of such a thing.

Steve - I wish you wouldn't exagerate, it gives us Texans a bad name! You know that it takes at least 10 - 12 moth balls to fill a 1 lb. can...

But you only need the can filled half way derek...

By the way, that's how moth balls work....

I know I wouldn't be hanging around any place where there were human testicles laying in somebodies drawer, dahmer style. Can' say I'd blame the moths for steering clear either.
