Last weekend I raised my mast and set new 1/2" chainplate eyebolts from CD.This weekend after getting the angles right and drilling the screw holes I removed the eye bolts one at a time to place the sealant. For some unknown reason one of the brand new bolts that spun on so easy a week ago siezed up and competely stripped the threads The bolts looked fine except for a very small amount of epoxy from pushing the bolts through the holes I had over drilled and filled.Would this cause the problem ? The imprortant question however is where can I order this single bolt.I am pretty sure CD will say they can't break up a kit Does anyone have a web site or phone number for the dealer or manufacturer of this eye bolt ? Thanks,Craig

Sounds like a case of classic Stainless Steel thread seizure. You should lubricate all stainess before threading the nut on. Relatively minor thread irregularities or contamination will cause them to gall up and seize at the slightest provocation. :>(

I've noted that some alloys seem to be more succeptible this than others... as are bolts from different manufacturers.

Craig,

I agree completely with ClamBeach. This is such a common problem that when Champion Trailers sent me a shipment of stainless steel trailer hardware, they included a big pink full page warning not to even hand assemble any of the stainless steel fasteners dry. Ignoring that, I hand threaded a 3/8-NC bolt and nut. The threads siezed so bad I wrung off the bolt in a vise trying to remove the nut. It doesn't seem to much matter what you put on the threads, just don't assemble them dry. Molydisulfide paste is highly recommended, but even polysulfide sealant will work just fine.

As for a replacement for your 1/2" SS eye bolt with welded deck flange, I suspect those are custom made by or for Catalina Yachts. You might just have to bite the bullet and get a whole set. At least they're not expensive. Maybe you could offer the spares for sale here on our Swap Meet board. You might not be the first or only C-25 owner to screw up one of those 1/2" lower shroud chainplate eye bolts. Ask 1/3 the price of a full set, and you get yours for free.

Why don't you ask the folks at Catalina Direct for a single bolt. I would be surprised if they didn't sell just one. They have broken apart kits for me before when I didn't need all of the parts.
Best folks that I have ever dealt with. Of course Lindsey no longer works there, so that may make a difference.

Thanks guys for the advise. I've operated and repaired heavy equipment for 25 years and have never seen a nut so siezed. When I finally got it off the bolt was bent and too hot to touch. I always lube my stainless fasteners when they go into my mast or boom but I didn't know about the stainless to stainless problem. This was definitely learning the hard way. It was comforting to hear someone else had the same problem (thanks Leon) and I will ask CD if they will break up a kit, though the last time I did (backstay tang) they said forget it. Thaks again, Craig
