i will be in the area next week and am looking to do a little exploring in my free time.
i will start in richmond, mt crawford, and chesapeake vi. areas and later in the week i will be close to baltimore/ annapolis area.
i am looking to explore unusual marine stores such as salvage and highly stocked rigging shops.
i also know of the city docks area at annapolis and will be there.

am i missing anything good for what i am looking to do?

Depending on how much time you have you might consider St. Michaels and/or Oxford.

There's Fawcetts in Annapolis for boat goodies.

Dave, I just got back from a road trip, with my first stop in Baltimore and heading south from there along the coast. The contributors to the forum helped me plan the trip.

The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum is located in St. Michaels, Maryland, and it is excellent! It has exhibits that demonstrate the history of sailing and fishing on the Chesapeake. The general concept is very similar to Mystic Seaport, but it's focused on the Chesapeake Bay.

If you have never been to Baltimore's Inner Harbor, by all means see it. The USS Constellation is on exhibit there, and you can go through every part of it, from decks to bilges. Also, they have a diesel submarine and a Coast Guard Cutter, and other displays.

If you have time, the Mariner’s Museum, in Newport News, Virginia, is unbeatable. It has exhibits of worldwide significance. For example, the wreck of the Monitor is being preserved there, and many articles recovered from it are on display. Probably the holy grail of items that I saw on display is the chronograph that was used by Capt. James Cook to explore and chart the Pacific. There is a small craft section with small racing and power cruisers and sailboats, and a section containing maritime art. No Catalinas are on display, but a poster at the entrance to the small craft section features a photo of a C-22 with it's smiling owners.

I stopped at a yacht brokerage in Annapolis and told the broker (Scott Morrison, Sail Yard, Inc., 326 N. First St. Suite 18) that I am about a year away from being ready to buy, but that I want to explore the alternatives. He spent about 2 hours showing me around, suggesting boats I might like, and pointing out types of equipment that I should consider.

I have a brochure from the Maritime Museum, the Mariner’s Museum and the USS Constellation, and will mail them to you if you'll e-mail me your snail mail address.
