Check out the thread that Jim started re: Fleet 7 News...C30 Sold. I said some really rash stuff to egg you guys on and get you on the water for some racing fun. Nothing serious, of course

How about racing on May 15?

I will put up the prize money....HaHaHa

Susie said we could get a Whisker Pole but I need to find one on sale VERY soon because Cat Direct has one for around $330 and that's a bit pricey. Where can I get one like the Forespar 7-17 telescoping, heavy duty type on sale? Close by? Any ideas?

PS last night sailed under reefed main and genny rolled up to a 90 and was still getting knocked flat. It was so much fun! Met American Mike on the water and sailed around his boat for awhile. The wind slowly dropped and I shook out the reefs. Slowly it died all the way and I ended up motoring back in.

Tonight it was WINDY and UGLY. I worked on the C-30 engine with David (he's had 3 lessons now and will be my crew on the 15th most likely).

You might try Minneys -- they occasionally have used ones for significantly less than the price of a new one. Also, some have suggested using a telescoping paint pole (much less $) and refitting the ends with Forespar parts -- certainly not heavy duty, but it seems others have used it successfully.

Weather seems to be strange lately. I took a few days off for another island trip. The news guys said Monday would be really hot with offshore winds, which I thought would mean I'd have to motor over. Mid-day it was hot with little wind at the marina, but the wind picked up progressively, from the normal west/southwest onshore direction, the further we got out. Reefed the main about 5 miles out and "flew" over to Avalon in very good time. After a couple big cruise ships arrived and LOTS of people started getting ferried in, we motored towards the West End Tuesday morning in calm and summerlike warm conditions. But at the Isthmus it was really blowing through the gap, so we headed up to a much calmer Emerald Bay. We were the only boat there. Did a very short snorkeling dive there, after which I decided I need a hood for the 60 degree water this time of year. The wind calmed down significantly after we went back to the Isthmus in the afternoon. Very few boats there. Went to the infamous "Taco Tuesday" nite at Doug's Harbor Reef -- an event put on by management to encourage the locals to get out in the offseason. During the night the wind picked up from the southeast, making things a bit rolly on the harbor. I first thought it was a Santa Ana, but there was a lot of dew which ruled that out. Left about 10:30 in hazy sunshine with decent winds still from the southeast (usually not strong from that direction). Even reefed the main for about an hour. But the wind slowly started to weaken, and we started the motor up about 5 miles out. Almost no wind by the time we hit the harbor. Another great early season trip.

Sal made his out of PVC, seemed to work OK. However, that post was a joke.

Yes, Richard, the weather has been very strange - strong south winds, south swell, very gusty (last night 16 gusting 23). Big banks of fog and low clouds, 100 degrees during the day inland and 65 in the early evening at the beach.

Wish we could make early season trips to Catalina. We will have to do an overnighter to San Diego bay. I would like to overnight at the Coronados, but they have put in place such strict clearing in requirements (returning from Mexico) that for a sail boat not berthed in San Diego bay it adds about 12 hours to your trip. Maybe we will do an early season trip to Oceanside harbor.

Wow, did we have a suddent change of weather up here in Hemet, also!!
109 degrees on Wednesday, then around 7pm a fog bank rolled in, the winds picked up, and the temperature dropped to around 52 degrees, with a very cool night and then fog this morning, coool all day, and lots of clouds this evening and more with cool weather (that, my friends, is what English teachers call a "run-on sentence"...).

Richard, now that we have a real fleet in the San Diego area (Remember: If anyone reading this lives in the SD area, give either Jim B. or me a holler if you'd like to sail with us and then maybe become an "official" part of the Seventh Fleet. No dues allowed ), we should plan a cruise to a common destination like Dana Point. Just need to get the brainwaves rolling on things like this as we sail into the summer.

I will have to call Minney's and ask...they don't list any specific equipment on their website. The paint pole sounds good, though. I've spied them at my local Ace Hardware. I will have to look at how heavy duty they are and maybe make one of my own. The ones at Ace are GOLD anodized aluminum even!!

Jim, I've been thinking (it happens occasionally...thinking ) about whether this website needs a separate fleet discussions area. Or maybe it is just fine the way it is so everyone sees what we are doing and/or discussing and/or planning. Maybe it is just fine to start a new "Fleet 7 News" thread anytime one of us gets a wild hair stuck somewhere.

Hey, Ray. You around somewhere? Ready to race yet? How about Mike? Anyone else in or near Mission Bay want to try your luck at beating JimB the current "go fast guru"?

So Doug...where is it you store your whisker pole precisely?

Got grades to get out by tomorrow so must stop. Hope to see you all soon on the MBay.
