My '86 FK didn't come with and adjustable outhaul but it does have an adjustable split backstay with which I can bend the mast. Is the amount of mast bend enough to for-go an adjustable outhaul control to flatten the mainsail? Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
Joe - I'm not much of a theorist, but I believe that the backstay adjuster will flatten the middle of the main (reducing the draft)and an outhaul will flatten the shelf at the foot. I think you probably should have both. Derek
I have never read Sail Power by Wallace Ross but it's been added to my list of books to read. Thanks. I'll be installing the outhaul. Since I already have the topping lift and reef lines run on the outside of the boom I'm opting for the internal outhaul kit (8:1). Thanks for your comments and suggestions. Sorry to be so green about all this stuff. There's so much to learn.
The outhaul I use often to flatten the sail just prior to reefing. Plus the flatter sail seems to point better in moderate to strong winds. Outhaul all the way lose makes a big difference in light air.
The backstay adjuster I don't use very much to reduce weather helm or significantly flatten the sail. Tight for upwind, light in light airs, slack for downwind, and I slacken it all the way when leaving the boat in the slip. No reason to leave the rig tensioned.
When you tighten the backstay the aft lower shrouds may get very tight. Make sure you slack those a little if you are planning to try to use a lot of mast bend.
