For anyone in Casco Bay looking for an afternoon of goofy rivalry and what promises to be a decent post-race party with the promise of a decent local band, please join us for the 2004 Cupcake Cup. What started as the inevitable grudge match between two over-weighted small cruising boats towing dinghies, has become an inevitable grudge match between as many over-weighted small boats as possible. The race is named for the first winner of the race - who weren't towing anything we might point out - Cupcake, named by the youngest member of their crew. Last year Cupcake actually produced a silver cup engraved with the name of the race and the winners.

The invitation to challengers follows - sorry about the inside jokes. We'd love to see this become a regular thing for those whose taste runs to the silly side.

The date will follow soon.

>Invitation to Challengers
:
:THE VICTORIOUS 2003 Cupcake Cup winners, the tako kichi syndicate, hereby
:invite challenges for the 2004 race season. The invitation to challenge is
:open to all sailing yachts eligible for PHRF competition, although PHRF
:certification is not required. Specific invitations to challenge are
:extended to Stornaway and Cupcake, and will be extended to local members of
:the Catalina 25 class association, local participants of
:http://www.sailboatowners.com, and may be offered to any vessel any of the
:inaugural participants wishes. An invitation to Rita P will be extended if
:the tako kichi syndicate can find their e-mail address. Tako kichi never
:knew Bay Dream's e-mail address but would send them a copy of this missive
:if they did.
:
:The format of the 2004 race will be as follows:
:
:1. Format will be PHRF corrected time on time unless the organizers decide
:to do something else. Yachts will be issued either their PHRF rating as
:stated on their PHRF certificate, or will be issued a rating calculated by
:using their PHRF-NE base handicap with any adjustment allowed by that
:organization, or will be rated by the organizers in some other way, or will
:just go sailing damn it. Boats will race in PHRF trim, or they won't.
:
:2. All boats will race under white sails only. Laminate sails will be
:permitted. Molded sails will not. Dirty sails are the challenging
:syndicate's problem. No free flying sails of any description will be
:permitted. Any yacht caught flying a kite while racing will get an
:immediate
:bonus to its handicap. This means a kite and is not slang for a spinnaker
:nor does it mean check fraud.
:
:3. A committee boat will used to officiate the race. In the event no one
:is willing to officiate, tako kichi will officiate. In the event that the
:tako kichi syndicate is required to officiate, the yacht will participate
:under the stewardship of Jessica Demers. In the event that Justin Andrus
:officiates and tako kichi is the winning yacht, Justin Andrus doesn't want
:to hear about it.
:
:4. The race will be conducted in any winds from 5 to 25 knots. The race
:will not start if the winds are not within those parameters. The race may
:be postponed or canceled on account of lightning.
:
:5. US Rules of Sailing 2004 will be in use as may be modified by the tako
:kichi syndicate prior to the race.
:
:6. Should the yacht Rita P participate, a bounty of one case of beer of the
:recipients'
:choice will be paid to any yacht that lee-bows her off the course and out
:of
:tako kichi's way. Actually, that bounty is available to any yacht in any
:race in which Rita P and tako kichi may be competing.
:
:7. The owner-driver rule shall be in effect. The Cup Cake syndicate may
:not hire any rock stars to sail their boat. The Rita P syndicate may
:utilize
:rock stars as apparently all crew members fall into that category. The tako
:kichi syndicate don't need no stinking rock stars.
:
:8. What's the deal with Rita P's hooting and hollering on the race course
:anyway?
:
:9. There will be prizes for all participating yachts who register more
:than
:one week before the entry date. There will be prizes for yachts
:registering
:after that date but they have the potential to suck. Actually, all the
:prizes are likely to suck. Except the cup itself - that doesn't suck.
:
:10. In the event that a yacht other than tako kichi, Cup Cake, or
:Stornaway
:wins the 2004 event - too bloody likely unless someone earns that bounty -
:the cup itself will remain in the possession of the Cup Cake syndicate.
:
:11. The race course will be determined prior to the start - probably. In
:any event, the race shall be around the course twice. This gives the
:opportunity for heckling. Heckling is encouraged. A prize shall be given
:for the most creative heckle. The prize shall be given to the hecklee.
:
:12. There shall be no protests - take it up with your insurance company.
:Unless you're Rita P - I don't think they want to hear from you any time
:soon.
:
:13. A post-race event shall be held at a destination to be specified in
:the
:Notice of Race. It shall be the responsibility of each yacht to ensure that
:there is enough beer.
:
:14. Any yacht racing with a child on board will get an immediate
:sympathetic bonus to its handicap. Any yacht on which a child on board
:says
:"Good Morning" to another yacht, while "Good Morning" is still relevant, on
:the morning following the race, shall be subject to merciless prank calling
:at their syndicate's headquarters. Child shall be defined liberally but
:shall not include any person over the age of 72, kittens, or John Dalton.
:The final determination of whether any entity is a child shall be up to the
:sole discretion of the tako kichi syndicate.
:
:
:NOW THEN, all concerned syndicates may challenge as they see fit.
