Is Fort Jefferson (and back) a reasonable goal for mid-june? 'looks like we'd have to be totally self sufficient; one long day out (with the wind) and perhaps an overnight getting back? If Sal made it to Hawaii ....
Greg, the only advice I can give from experience in that area is be extra careful once we get into the June through November period. It is not unusual for squals to come up out of nowhere with winds upward of 50kts. As a matter of fact my neighbor just returned from the Keys after spending a week waiting for the winds and seas to laydown so he could go there. He drives a 46' SeaRay and if he would not try it, it must be pretty wild there right now. He saw about 20 boats in the Lauderdale area, on his way home, some waiting for over two weeks trying to get to the Bahamas. When we sailed the west coast of FLorida in June and July we made sure we were back in the ditch by noon if we went outside just because of the afternoon squals. Just be extra careful and check two or three weather sources before you go. Good luck and smooth sailing.
