I was out on a friends boat (Coronado 23)this past weekend, and played with his sails. He as a very complete inventory (Working Jib, 130% 155%, Spinnaker etc). I did like the performance when we flew the 155 Genoa (I want one). My question is with a roller furling system and a 150% would I be able to furl the sail in heavy wind to decrease the amount of sail I have out and still have an acceptable sail shape. Or would I be better of with another option? If another option what would it be?
Common assumption is that a sail can be furled about half way before it loses all of it's shape. There is such a thing as a foam luff that helps maintain shape when "reefing".......Personally I would be changing headsails according to weather range of forecast between a 110 and the 150, I know that's a pain, but I hate looking at a poorly set sail.
When it all boils down you either need two furlers....(not a real option on these boats) or you settle for a headsail which is less than optimum in many conditions (usually too small) for the sake of ease of operation, or you forego the convenience and go back to hanking on. (the money you can get for the CDI will go towards the conversion of the existing jib and the 150) Then get a suit of sails with just the right sail for every condition.
Personally, I have a 110 on the furler, and an Ullman drifter for less than 10 knot conditions. Does not go to windward quite as well as a 150, but makes up for it in speed. Of course its a dream off the wind. Seems to be a workable setup.
